View Full Version : OEM Firestones howling, uneven wear.
lrg760 06-03-2007, 10:15 PM Got 50k on my tires and the fronts are worn out on the outside shoulder and are howling like mad. Sure I rotated my tires but obviously not enough!!!!
But in my ignorance I took the car to the dealer for an alignment and was told that this car doesn't need one...ha!!!
The reason it was in there was the front tires were wearing badly. Now before long the Kilometers had really done some damage and the howling began.
I will have to replace two tires now and stick to a 5K rotation cycle.
Has anyone had any experiences they would like to share about their tires?
GDZHHR 06-03-2007, 10:16 PM Not quite the miles you have, but no problems yet. We rotate each time we change the oil.
Black Rose 06-03-2007, 10:26 PM Firestone Affinity tires are known to be problematic and very sensitive to tire pressure.
If they are overinflated, the centres will wear quickly. If they are underinflated, the outside edges wear out quickly.
I rotated my tires for the first time at around 14,000 kms and they are wearing evenly. No issues with them so far.
EDIT: Never mind...looks like you have the Firehawk tires. No experience with those.
ws91420 06-03-2007, 10:56 PM Firestines are not my favorite tires. In fact I wouldn't have them on any car or truck I have. Nowadays manufactures put on low bid and whatever they can get in bulk. I work at a tire store and have seen numerous bad tires on Dodges esp trucks (Goodyears)
GDZHHR 06-03-2007, 11:00 PM Mine are Affinity's too........BR, how did you know what tires Irg has?
07hhrlt2 06-03-2007, 11:17 PM its always good to get your alignment checked twice a year also, just because the steering wheel it straight and it dont pull dosent meant the alignment is good. i should know i work at sears and see this all the time, we tell people this but they think nothing of it, if ya go to ANY sears auto center(where i work) they will check your alignment for free and let you know if it is out of alignment. auto companies dont align 85% of the cars in the factory. just a lil heads up to keep your tires wearing evenly :)
Black Rose 06-03-2007, 11:56 PM Mine are Affinity's too........BR, how did you know what tires Irg has?
Looked in his gallery....he has 17" inch rims.
16" rims have Affinity's. 17" rims have Firehawks.
GDZHHR 06-03-2007, 11:59 PM Gotcha.
Got 50k on my tires and the fronts are worn out on the outside shoulder and are howling like mad.
Mine has similar wear pattern showing, but I guess I caught the problem too soon to get the "howling".

I have had my HHr for 15 Months and I have rotated my tires every 7000 miles and I now have 45,404 miles on it and I will have to get new tires by Winter, I will never put Firestone on my vehicle. These suck and 96 % of my miles are all High way miles.

Goose 06-04-2007, 06:50 AM I'm thinking of dumping the Affinitys already with only 2K on them and either getting a set of Goodyear Triple Treads, Comforttreds or Response or perhaps Michelin Exaltos (had these on the Matrix..great tire but pricey)
Have never liked Firestones..never balance correctly and always seem to be a bit out of round

solman98 06-04-2007, 03:28 PM SO far no issues with the Firestones. I check the pressure every month or so. I've always has good luck with Firestones in the past. Last Thanksgiving I put a set of Fuzion HRi's on the wifes,

Got them at Firestone also. Been real happy with them. ;)
Rickh 06-04-2007, 06:29 PM First, the Affinity tires are rated for 50,000 miles. You (and others who posted) got 50,000 miles out of them. Seems they did what they were supposed to do. Lots of folks mentioned they don't like Firestones (or others). I guess I'm just naive, but mine go round, ride smooth, I rotate them every 4000 miles and check pressure monthy..I just don't see what is not to like. I SURELY would not dump them with only 2000 miles or something someone mentioned on them...you plan to throw them out anyway, then just wear them to they are bald, then replace..but you have money to burn, the congrats and hope you enjoy your replacements.
Goose 06-04-2007, 06:42 PM Rick....I'm pretty sure they are out of round...trust me I would not dump them just for the hell of it or what someone said about them..had bad luck Firestones on my ZX3 as well...GY and Mich are a much better tire IMHO...hold the road better as well

HonestBlues 06-04-2007, 06:50 PM Michelin HydroEdge are the next tires going on Rebel Grey.I have done tons of research and they won out over Goodyear TripleTred. Sam's Club will order them for me and their price is a good deal.
Goose 06-04-2007, 07:42 PM HB...I have an almost brand new set in my garage with 8K on them....great tire but on the Matrix VERY loud...I could not believe they were so noisy...then again most tires were on that car were as it ate them up like candy
Comfort Treds were very quiet but wallowed worse than the Affinitys do
The Edges were great in the snow (no help for you eh?)
205/55 16's so they aren't the right size for the HHR

the goodyear responseedges are awesome i got to drive on them in a goodyear ride and drive and i loved them and i sell a lot of them at work and the people who have them love them, they are worth the money
chingchonger 06-04-2007, 08:21 PM If the tires seem out of round, balance the wheels.
If the wheels don't balance right, find a new tire place that can do it right.
Wearing on the shoulders, don't corner so hard.
Shoulders still wearing, add a couple of psi to the tires.
aven11 06-04-2007, 08:48 PM Hi All, I Never like Firestone tires there Crap period:red: ,company should go Bankrupted!! I gonna get Micheelin Hydro Edge they come with a 90000 mile yes 90000 miles thats also Pro Rated warrenty from SEARS if you maintain the tire to Sears Specs and the tires only last lets say 45000 your will receive credit for 50%.:thumb: You can't go wrong at Sears for tires!:one: ....Aven

If they are out of round, the dealer should replace them (at least they do up here in the GWN). They did that with my Malibu....took 6 months before it failed the tests they have to do on the tire, but it eventually failed.
I have a very good dealership to work with, so obviously YMMV.
chingchonger 06-04-2007, 09:39 PM I gonna get Michelin Hydro Edge they come with a 90000 mile yes 90000 miles that's also Pro Rated warranty from SEARS if you maintain the tire to Sears Specs and the tires only last lets say 45000 your will receive credit for 50%.:thumb: You can't go wrong at Sears for tires!:one: ....Aven
Sears sure has a great marketing plan. They have a customer for life and it's only costing them 50% of the price of new tires. Most of these customers probably won't even keep their cars for that long and Sears still retains the customer's loyalty for tires, maintenance, etc.
Goose 06-04-2007, 09:42 PM Yes they should BR and who knows...maybe I will go that route but I went that route with my Vue and Bridgestone tires...could not get a good set of tires...3 sets in 6 months...I don't have time to keep going back and forth letting usually not very tire knowledgable people trying to balance a set of tires. I would rather put good rubber on my vehicles by someone who knows what they are doing (tire shop)
I'll be doing the same thing with the rotors when they finally start to warp.
I'd rather invest the $$ in quality items when the OEM parts crap out instead of applying band aids every 4k or so miles
