View Full Version : Oil Filter Debris 2.2L/2.4L engines; metal shavings Lone Ranger 06-04-2007, 11:42 PM ... Goose 06-05-2007, 05:24 AM I didn't notice any at my 1st change at 1100 miles but I really didn't look all that closely either. All the more reason to do that 1st change earlier I guess I'll check again at 4100 miles when I do my 2nd change Goose Goose 06-05-2007, 05:27 AM btw that is a great article! Could we get access to this every month?? :thumb: Goose Black Beauty 06-05-2007, 06:41 AM Sounds like a pretty normal occurence, there used to be a break-in oil change period, like 500mi.. Now people want to avoid paying $20.00 and carry this kind of debris around for 3,000-5,000 mi.. Lone Ranger 06-05-2007, 07:56 AM ... Goose 06-05-2007, 10:57 PM Wow this is great info! Here is a link that describes the no start condition that a few folks have experienced http://216.182.211.32/techlink/images/issues/may07/may2007.pdf Goose GDZHHR 06-05-2007, 11:05 PM Looks to me like someone screwed up the code. That page shouldn't be accessable. Goose 06-05-2007, 11:13 PM Looks to me like someone screwed up the code. That page shouldn't be accessable. SSssshhhhhhh! ;) Goose TomsHHR 06-05-2007, 11:19 PM But it has been a known item from the early 2006 model in 2005 it was found. hhrcrafty 06-05-2007, 11:32 PM *sigh* The debris is coming from a passage that is between the pump and the oil filter. When the oil is pressurized in the engine for the first time the debris is caught by the filter and cannot move into the rest of the engine. It cannot backflow into the passage, either. Essentially, they're saying let the oil filter DO ITS JOB, and don't try to talk the customer into rebuilding his engine. Black Beauty 06-06-2007, 07:15 AM Panic time... Anyone wanting to join a class action? You know, it`s amazing the kind of product they put out, that costs $20,000 and is hand crafted/built. ws91420 06-06-2007, 09:25 AM This is normal on any new car. The difference with the HHR is since you are replacing a filter element vs a spin on filter is it easier to see. Now if you have shavings in following oil changes you might raise an alarm. News Flash, Einstein: I was posting the info as a service to the forum so other owners could be aware, but you have to come along and throw something from a completely unrelated post in my face. What is your problem? Snoopy 06-06-2007, 04:06 PM Frankly, I don't understand why some people are getting "anxious" over having metal debris in their filter. Metal debris has been found in NEW oil filters for years...as stated by ws91420. You couldn't see it because of the spin-on filters. It's part of the machining/assembly process. The same goes for your transmission pan....found very small "machine dust" in Hydramatic trans pans for about 30 years......probably why they used to put small magnets on the inside of the pan. Finding the particles, just tells you the filters are doing what their intended purpose is. I would worry if I found the filings in the oil draining from the car.;) HonestBlues 06-06-2007, 04:11 PM As we say in the aircraft maintenence industry,if it ain't big enough to have a serial number on it,it's normal fuzz from a new gearbox. Snoopy 06-06-2007, 04:11 PM Man....you are good....:thumb:  :thumb: karen1953 06-06-2007, 04:20 PM Might be that this is one of those things that need to be highlighted some how for those who are new. To those of us who have had our HHR for a year or so, this is old news. But to someone who has just joined and/or just got thier HHR it is new. No reason for the old timers to dump on the new people. I still do not know why Lone Ranger deleted two post including the starting thread. Some members need to Back Off Again! Yes HonestBlues you are so right! Snoopy 06-06-2007, 05:51 PM His edit "reason" says, he deleted it because it offended Black Beauty. ;) ;) karen1953 06-06-2007, 05:54 PM His edit "reason" says, he deleted it because it offended Black Beauty. ;) ;) Saw that. :red:   Black Beauty 06-06-2007, 06:25 PM News Flash, Einstein: I was posting the info as a service to the forum so other owners could be aware, but you have to come along and throw something from a completely unrelated post in my face. What is your problem? If I had just joined this forum, I probably would`ve jumped in my new ride, drove to the dealer, and demanded an explaination as to how my engine was full of metal, he was aware of this, and I would be demanding a replacement motor right now, (I`d wait until it`s done ), or I`d be contacting the BBB, the CIA, and maybe the FBI.:D L.R., I see you live around me, in your avatar, we must meet sometime (soon).:thumb: Lone Ranger 06-06-2007, 06:31 PM If I had just joined this forum, I probably would`ve jumped in my new ride, drove to the dealer, and demanded an explaination as to how my engine was full of metal, he was aware of this, and I would be demanding a replacement motor right now, (I`d wait until it`s done ), or I`d be contacting the BBB, the CIA, and maybe the FBI.:D L.R., I see you live around me, in your avatar, we must meet sometime (soon).:thumb: Nice keyboard flex, loser.
