View Full Version : Steering Wheel Audio Controls
adamlowery 02-21-2006, 10:46 AM I didn't get the upgraded sound system and was wondering if I could if could buy the radio controls for the steering wheel. I would think that it would just connect some how and not be too hard. (not have to run wires)
SoCalHHR 02-21-2006, 12:23 PM It's a different radio Adam. I dont' think the single CD changer model supports the wheel controls. (I could be proven wrong though...)
adamlowery 02-21-2006, 12:28 PM I called my dealership and he is going to have a look at it. I'd take a look, but I'm afraid the airbag would deploy on me. :)

You and me both! Airbags are scary!
Nevrnfpwr 02-21-2006, 05:48 PM On my 2LT, I have the 'upgraded' Pioneer system with a single CD player (not 6 CD changer) and I have the steering wheel controls. I love not having to reach for the radio, but think the buttons need to be flip-flopped. With the 5-spd, I would like to be able to control the volume and track functions with my left hand. Yes, I am a terrible channel surfer, even with CDs.
adamlowery 03-01-2006, 09:37 AM Well. I went ahead and looked. The radio control module is only 15 bucks so I Had to go ahead and try. I got it pryed open quite a bit, but just couldnt seem to get the whole thing off. I tried for about five minutes. I'm almost positive it would just plug in. I see what looks like a plug in when I pry it, but I can't see enough to be 100%. If I get any more info i'll post.
adamlowery 03-01-2006, 10:45 AM I got a good screwdriver and I could definetely tell that there was an input, most likely for the radio controls. The tab on the right side is just a lil lip and comes out easily. The other tab that holds the plastic in goes straight down into the metal it looks like. I pulled hard too, not sure how I'm gonna get it off.
adamlowery 03-01-2006, 11:14 AM Update...again...I found my tiny led flashlight and I can see 2 wires (forgot what color) that connect to this plug in thing that I think the radio control module plugs into. Also the plastic peice where the radio controls go is held in by one tab and one phillips screwdriver that you cant get to without taking out the airbag. So now i'm gonna see if i can take out the airbag and get to it that way.
captain howdy 03-01-2006, 11:20 AM  Warning! Do Not Play Around With Your Airbags!
adamlowery 03-01-2006, 11:22 AM It ain't gonna kill me, and if I mess up its only like 500 bucks to get a new one. :)
captain howdy 03-01-2006, 11:26 AM Try more like a grand! I had a buddy that deployed his airbags and it ended up costing him like $2500 for both the driver and passenger sides.
Jddrumman 03-01-2006, 11:27 AM Adam, you are one brave man... :D

m0rie 04-03-2006, 12:39 PM Adam - Where you ever successful hooking up the steering wheel controls?
Adam if you change the controls how did the air bag come out I want to order the Leather wheel and change out mine.
adamlowery 04-03-2006, 02:53 PM I can't figure out how to take the airbag out for the life of me. I'm not afraid to take it out, but I just couldnt find the screws to do it. the plastic for both sides are just held in by one screw. If you move the platic over a little you can see the screw down in there about 2 or so inches.
fastsuv 04-04-2006, 08:16 AM I'm also interested in adding the steering wheel controls. I looked at the airbag removal situation to see if I could see anything. At the hub of the steering wheel, from underneath, there are two small (1/8" diameter) holes at about 4 o'clock and at 8 o'clock. Maybe these are holes for an "airbag release" tab or something similar. It's really frustrating to not have release of the factory Helm manual yet. I always buy the factory manual for my vehicles because I do a lot of mods, and Helm said they will E-mail me as soon as the manual becomes available. Meanwhile, a friendly dealer service department would probably let you look at their copy ( I have done this before).

adamlowery 04-04-2006, 09:21 AM I poked around some more last night and saw what your talking about, but still no idea how to get it off.
