View Full Version : Small scratches
donbb82 07-10-2007, 01:40 PM I have a few small scratches, one from my ring and another by the gas cap (unknown) it looks like just surface scratches. I tried to use polishing compound but it made it look a little dull around the scratch, it helped a little. Any suggestions on how to get them out?
betterof2evils4 07-10-2007, 02:17 PM Touch-up paint maybe? :thumb:
the_shmoo 07-10-2007, 03:43 PM I use Mothers Billet Aluminium polish on my Harley, tried some on a small scratch near my hood at fender. Disappeared. May want to give it a try. Also tried on my daughters blue Cobalt (dark), did not dull surface and polished up nice.:D
Hope this helps.
HHRDreaming 07-10-2007, 03:57 PM Hi,
We just got our HHR one month ago today! Love the car but we too have had a few minor surface scratches - one actually noticed after picking up from the dealer - bummer! Anyway, where do you buy this compound? We live north of Toronto.
Thanks for the information.
Black Rose 07-10-2007, 04:05 PM Canadian Tire or Partsource.
I know CT has two different types of Turtle Wax rubbing compound and I'm pretty sure I've seen Mother's products on the shelf there.
the_shmoo 07-10-2007, 04:07 PM What he said or Wal-Mart
HHRDreaming 07-10-2007, 05:11 PM Thanks! We'll give it a try.
Hamer1 07-10-2007, 10:17 PM I had alot of fine swirl marks on my hood. A month ago I used Turtle Wax's new polishing compound. It worked very well. I thought it was just hiding the marks but after a month they still haven't came back.
scaleguy 07-10-2007, 10:47 PM For slight scratches clean the area very well and use a fine compound, for heavier scratches you can try a heavier compound then a lighter compound and finally a good wax...visit your local automotive paint supplier and they will guide you to good products and provide you with good advice...plus come up to the Dells and I can try a couple of things from my bag of tricks while you are there...hey bribery to get people to come to the run...works for me !!!
GCarp 07-11-2007, 08:05 AM Just be careful not to rub through the clearcoat...
scaleguy 07-11-2007, 08:08 AM great advice GCarp you are exactly right !!!
tomdent1 07-11-2007, 10:20 AM Try some 2000 grit wet /dry sandpaper, compound, polish, wax. You can also put clear in small scratches, sand and buff. With 2000 you can sand it pretty good and be safe. Just go slow so you don't go through the clear. You don't want to smooth it up so much that the orange peel in the area you sanded doesn't match the peel in other parts of the car.
Wheelie7 07-11-2007, 10:57 AM Heehee, To Wheelie, this is definately WAR!, War against the SCRATCH COLONY!...He is not going to back out of this fight!, Wheelie is a 4 wheeled fighter!, He is about to get touch up paint on his scars...TAKE THAT SCRATCH COLONY!!..HAAHAAHAA!!..LOL!
GCarp 07-11-2007, 12:25 PM I've seen too many cars on the road that look like old sunburn (you know the peel). Usually caused by the clearcoat wearing through. I would rather use a product that builds up or fills in the scratches on today's cars rather than a compound or abrasive. Just my :2cents:

Just think of it as putting iodine on a scratch :thumb: :D

I hope your car never goes to the body shop.
Go to Home depot and ask for Gel-Gloss liquid (not spray) I have used this stuff for years, it wont hurt clear coat an removesmost scratches. Take a towel put a small amount on it and GENTLEY rub the area. Have used this on my SSR and also HHR with no damage.
HHRDreaming 07-12-2007, 05:56 PM Hi,
I went to Canadian Tire today and looked for Mothers Billet Alluminum Polish. They just had Mothers Billet Metal Polish. I didn't purchase - I wanted to check with all of you first. They also had Turtle Wax products as well as other products. They all claim not to harm clear coat finish. Is one product better than another or is it a personal preference?
chingchonger 07-12-2007, 06:04 PM When using a rubbing compound, most people will rub hard. DO NOT DO THIS.
You must apply light pressure using a polish applicator or a terry cloth folded in quarters.
For light scratches I use Mother's or McGuire's. First wash your car. Use Phase 1 paint cleaner, then use the phase 2 seal & glaze. Repeat phase 2 until desired finished. Wax it to protect it.
tomdent1 07-12-2007, 06:23 PM I use 3m compounds and mothers waxes and polishes.
