I have a 2006 1LT with the single disc and Ipod input but no sub, do these run an amp? is it located on the right side of the console lower half?
I want to upgrade the speakers in the doors and add a sub in the fact location, do you have to get a factory sub box or can one be made?

it would be easier to get a new head unit. if i remember correctly there was a thread about this and you had to run all you speaker wires into it and back out of the amp in the back. getting a head unit with a sub out you could use a stock enclosure and a different amp to power it.

I have installed an amp and 10" woofer. Picked up the input from the front speaker leads off the radio. Most amps will include the instructions. You can also pay about $10 from crutchfield for the instructions if you don't buy an amp from them.

Presently have the woofer in a external enclosure in the back. I'll be putting in in were the factory sub goes soon.

I also upgraded my factory speakers to some Polk Audio 2 way speakers that Circuit City had on sale.

Very happy with the current sound.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but, what's the "head unit"? Is that anything other than the actual radio? I'm researching what can be done to my stock radio without replacing it. Thinking about upgraded speakers and a sub.

I have an HHR LS with the most basic head unit, or stock radio. I have added a sub woofer and amp and upgraded the speakers to some Polk Audio that were on sale at Circuit City. VERY pleased with the outcome thus far. I may add a amp for the door speakers as well down the road. For the time being this will do.

BTW, choose an amp that has a remote level control. This you can mount under the dash and adjust the sub output level. Later, if you get an upgraded head unit, you can connect the amp to the head unit, and it will control the amp level.

My current sub is in an external box in the back. I'm planning on building a custom enclosure where a sub would go in the left rear quarter panel.

I read earlier in one of these radio threads where you shouldn't connect a sub to a speaker wire on the stock radio. Is that what you did or is there a sub out on our radios? I will probably go the same route as you did, including new door speakers.

Correct. You are not going to connect the subwoofer directly to the stock radio. I used a line output converter to connect the sub amplifer to the radio.
