OP thanks for sharing. Your post helped me with my install.

I do have one question for other members who have done this...

Does your amp turn on for a few seconds then shut off when you open and/or shut a door? It also happens when I lock the doors with the key fob.

I payed attention and the stock harness pink wire is spliced to my amps remote wire.

I ran that blue wire to a fuse in the console that only has power when the ignition is on. I found it with a test light. I got lucky and found the one that behaves just like the stock set up. Look at the fuse diagram in the owners owners manual. It will show you the most likely places to try. Now my aps only turn on with the switch on, and play until you open a door.

That kind of sounds like the power retention is banging a relay.

Thanks for your replies.

mrarff, I ended up running my amp remote to the windshield wiper fuse.

and for anyone wondering what I put in my HHR

MTX Magnum MB210SP Dual 10" Enclosure/Amp Combo
Amazon.com: MTX Magnum MB210SP Dual 10" Enclosure/Amp Combo: Car Electronics Amazon.com: MTX Magnum MB210SP Dual 10" Enclosure/Amp Combo: Car Electronics

The price is almost downright amazing (especially if you sing up for an amazon visa) and the sound will blow you away considering what you just paid. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

The gain on the amp is up about 1/4 of the way, bass is just under half at the OEM dash unit, and the mix is perfect. Nothing from the premium system is drowned out.

"A few basic tips here. Don't hook up a 1200-watt amp and subs this way." Quote

I guess a 1000 watt Polk four channel , two 300 watt 10" Polk subs and two 100 watt 4 way Kicker 6x9" may mix?? going to see,
I've already swapped out all the stock speakers with Kicker 3 way for a more crisp sound and hope to have the rest in this weekend.

I tapped into the aftermarket front speakers of my HHR and they are running off a four channel amp currently bridged until I get the new sub in. I'm feeding this from the stock head unit. Only problem/complaint from the driver (my wife) is the chimes now sound 10x times louder! I wish there was a way of turning them "down".

But bridged, the Cerwin Vega EXL400.4 is putting 200W into 4 ohms and my front woofers are 2 ohm and the tweets are 4 ohm (crossed over via home built 24db/oct passive crossover). Needless to say, it doesn't take much turning up the volume past mid way or so before the woofers are pumped into door panel bending distortion (need to make proper HDPE baffles).
