Proper Rear Drum Brake Adjustment Procedure

Tighten up
I don't know if it's true for all cars, but I always remembered Chevys thusly; on either side, you move the handle of the spoon UP to tighten. Easy: "TIGHTEN UP".
I also use a "two finger drag" ie, grab the tire lightly with thumb and index finger, rotating tire, and adjust 'til you can just turn the tire with two fingers, then, one click off (looser.)

Drum brake ajustment
That is the easy way. I got lucky and didnt have to. Ive got the original factory set up rear brake system. Retainer pin on both sides not the new style horseshoe retainer. After i installed, i drove it for a few days and found they must have ajusted well. Parking handle takes 2 clicks to work.

Horse shoe is the "old" style 2006-mid 2009. On the coiled spring hold downs the star adjuster is opposite direction.

Drum brake ajustment
OOPS, i actually thought the horshoe set up was the new style. Oh boy. My 09 Lt left the factory in may of 2009. I do like the system that came in my car. Works for me.

This is what I have on my 2008 2LT Panel. & I check adjustment every oil change (1x year).. And it usually can use a slight adjustment, & my Parking Brake sets at about 3 clicks. Don't need it too tight, just wear out the brake shoes prematurely.

To actually answer the necro question; You are supposed to use a brake caliper to measure the I.D. of the drum then use the other side of the caliper to set the shoes 0.025 inch smaller.
