I stand corrected (reminded). We made brake drums (as well as engine blocks, etc,) at the Buick and I should have known better .

When the cast iron in the ladle was too hot to pour they would toss in defective drum(s) to cool the iron. Those guys knew exactly how many drums to throw in to lower the temp to where they could pour it.

I could be wrong but I think if they used steel it would tend to 'work harden' in spots from normal breaking, then the brake pads could no longer get a good bite rendering the brakes useless.

Drum brake drums are made of cast iron for the same reason.

Yes, I know that our scrap metal goes to China by the boatload now to be processed. I also know the Chinese have the largest iron mines in the world now.

I'm pretty sure I read a few years ago that the last blast furnace in America had shut down production. The last I knew they still get in Pig iron, from China, to make both hot and cold rolled plates and sheets but those plants are being closed down too.

All thanks to the bunny huggers who don't want any of those bad nasty pollution creating {huge employing, high paying} factories here in the good old USA.

I spent most of my weekend using the pressure washer to get the green stuff that grows on the outside of my house off. Back when we had acid rain all the time that green crap did not grow on my house.
