Try this Mileage test.
i was a little disappointed in my mileage shortly after purchasing my 2006 model, in 2009.
so one day while driving 2 hrs home on a BORING interstate-freeway, with no traffic, I was playing with the digital mileage control.
I set my cruise, then RESET the gas "MPG", and drove for a few miles. I did this at several incremental speeds and was amazed at how fuel efficient it was WHILE CRUISING, and how different speeds changed the fuel economy.
in fact you could see the MPG change slightly, at the same speed, while going up or down a slight incline.( I am in Southern NJ and it is mostly all flat here.)
I concluded I do a lot of idling while making a phone call etc that affects my around town mileage.
but try this yourself if you get a chance!

I'm on a road trip. My last fill-up (Lee, Mass.) on the Mass turn pike to Rochester, NY all on highways and averaged 33.3 mpg running at the speed limit (65 mph). The DIC was registering 32.5 mpg.
Through out my trip (2000 miles so far), my worst mpg was 29.1 mpg. I do use cruise control and keep to the speed limits. Your right foot/cruise control is the best control of mpg.

I know that good fuel and 55mph makes a difference- 2 years ago I filled up my 2007 Prius in Iowa with no-alcohol 87 octane and when I filled up 300 miles later in Illinois I had averaged 53mpg- which was 5mpg better than normal hwy mpg. Traded that car in for a new Dodge minivan last fall and have been getting 27mpg highway- filled it up in KY and got a good tank of fuel and drove through 100 miles of 50-55mph construction slowdowns- when I stopped in Indianapolis my trip computer said 30.3 mpg. Many years ago I owned a diesel Chevette- rated for about 45mpg- On a trip through Georgia I hit a couple hundred miles of construction (adding another lane)- when I stopped to fill up in Florida I had gotten 62 mpg! Lots of 45-50mph, which was great for a diesel.

Back in the late 70s I had a 78 VW Rabbit diesel. The best mpg I got with that car was driving across Ohio with four people and luggage.. 360 miles and pumped in 6 gallons..60 mpg.. I owned that car six years and averaged 49+ mpg for all those years. The repair bills to keep that car running were high, but everything that failed were VW issues not diesel engine issues.
