300,000 miles isn't beyond the realm of an achievable service life.

The important thing is regular maintenance using quality fluids and parts.

keep it for a summer cruiser!! it may escalate in value after a few years, like the Vega, or Nova!

The dealer won't even sell that car. They will either scrap it, or maybe send it to auction.

As you said, they don't even want it, so they are just offering the $500 as a courtesy to you. If they give you $500, when all is said and done, they will probably be losing money

I have 125+K miles on my 06 and dealers offer $3500. ( I wrote a check for $14K when it was new). Since the car still runs like a champ, and the "new" cars are over priced IMHO. Any sort of HHR replacement (Buick Encor, Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson, etc.) are around $26+K, plus tax and fees run the cost up to $28K

Is the value so low cause of the mileage? sounds like my '08 LT with 80,000 miles might be worth something.

As for vehicles' longevity, I'm still driving my 1965 Chevy Van, although not sure of the mileage. The engine was replaced in 1988 with a 292 I6 with a TH350 tranny, so it's running great with only 77,000 on it. However, the rest of the 50 year-old running gear and all other components are in great shape and I have no intention of selling it or not driving it (it pulls our travel trailer). I'm guessing maybe 250,000 to 300,000 miles on it. I've had it since 1970 and have maintained it faithfully since then.

I'm wondering if it might be cheaper to replace engine and/or trans rather than buying a new car (not sure)? I think HHR's have timeless style and since the design never changed, will never look out-of-date. I'd keep it. We plan to keep ours for a long-long time, cause its a Chevy, cause it's cute, is handy, drive's great and carries our band equipment and lots of other stuff. There is no other car out there I would even consider buying.

That's about as factual as saying a dealer pays invoice price on a new vehicle to establish their actual cost.

They'll end up selling this vehicle if traded in; they just may not sell it from their lot. Many dealers won't even have to trouble with auction if they operate like in my region as there are secondary wholesale brokers who travel the lots buying for resale to smaller independent lots. To state they are doing one a courtesy with a lowball offer, implies they are performing a favor. We haven't seen this vehicle and know little other than the milage. But if a dealer came in that shy off recommended wholesale as this case appears to be on a drivable vehicle, I wouldn't see any reason to deal with them.

I had a local dealer call me the other day asking if I wanted to sell my 09. Said they were in the market buying back all 09's! Told them I was not in the market to sell. First time I've ever had a dealer call about buying back a car.

Wonder what is is about '09's? Why would they be buying back that year model? Any thoughts?
