2011 2.4l with YF5 California Emissions ??

I found another 2011 1LT with very Low Mileage that I am thinking about buying.

My only issue is that it shows is has;

YF5 Certification California Emissions.
and
NU5 California Bin 4

Both on the glove box RPO code list.

The car is in Washington State and the original owner is the seller but he has passed and his daughter is handling the transaction and does not know where the car was purchased.
I can do an Auto Check to find out but I would ask if any body has a 2011 HHR with 2.4L and Auto Trans with the California Emissions YF5.
I have no idea of what that means for Performance, Idle quality, and Mileage figures compared to the 2011 HHR's with Federal Emission standards.

Don't wanna make a mistake here....

Anybody ??

YF5 means it's registered for California and meets those emissions standards

http://www.gmfleet.com/content/dam/g...s-bulletin.pdf

NU5 bin 4 pertains to the catalytic converter specs for the California emissions

Your in Idaho, go for it!! Enjoy that new to you HHR!

that prevents Californian man to register the car in another state of the United States? Just a question for expanding my horizons.
It is prohibited by law or simply not in the tradition?

@ geg... No a California car can be registered anywhere in the states. Sometimes the other way around can be a problem though.

Correct Greybeard,

The car is registered in Washington State now without any problems.
The only thing I would like to know, is it a "problem for me" and my concerns for the Run quality.

My first HHR was a 2011 1LT with a 2.4L auto in Washington State where I lived at the time.
I did not even have to go thru the annual emissions test with the NT7 Federal tier 2 emission that came on that car. It was ordered and purchased new in Washington State.

My current daily driver is a 2010 1LT 2.4L auto and Starts cold without an issues. Once warmed up idles as smooth as glass.
I have let I idle for as much as 45 minute straight on a cold day when I need the heater on and never a sign of a burp or glitch. Just a steady smooth idle in neutral/park.
I do leave the air conditioning on to keep the cooling fans in the loop so the temps don't run to 217+ and back down to 180. The temps stays fairly stable at 180-190.

Most states give a year or 5 without emissions testing. They figure new doesn't need it.

Maybe if it has California it won't need it for a while. The MPG may be a bit lower; because it may be detuned (like the 145 HP Corvettes). I feel like Cal. just requires stricter factory QC on the cat, not sure if it is actually a different one, and different warranty.

I just ran across this ;

From the 2011 Owners Manual.

California Fuel
If the vehicle is certified to meet California Emissions
Standards, it is designed to operate on fuels that meet
California specifications. See the underhood emission
control label. If this fuel is not available in states
adopting California Emissions Standards, the vehicle
will operate satisfactorily on fuels meeting federal
specifications, but emission control system performance
might be affected. The malfunction indicator lamp could
turn on and the vehicle might fail a smog‐check test.
See Malfunction Indicator Lamp on page 4‑34. If this
occurs, return to your authorized dealer for diagnosis.
If it is determined that the condition is caused by the
type of fuel used, repairs might not be covered by the
vehicle warranty.

Also from my 2010 Warranty book it shows that the Emission Control System has

7 years or 70,000 miles Warranty with California Emissions
8 years or 80,000 miles Warranty with Federal Emissions

Certain parts may be covered beyond these warranty's

If cars equipped with Calif emissions couldn't run on fuel from other states without setting a MIL, we wouldn't be able to leave the state. I just drove from Calif to Texas, lived and worked there for 3 months, and drove back. No problems, no MILs. The car you're looking at has been in Washington, using WA gas, probably for a long time.

I've never seen any reference to Calif HHRs being rated for different MPG. I wouldn't worry about it. Upside is that you could sell it to a Calif resident and they would have no problem smogging it.
