Chevrolet HHR reliability - how does it compare?
#91
If we do not have a stat for a model year, it's because not enough owners participated. I certainly wish we could cover them all!

We've updated our reliability stats for the HHR to include owner experiences through June 30, 2014 (making them about 14 months ahead of some others).
Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:
2009 HHR: 39, low, small sample size
2008 HHR: 100, high, small sample size
2007 HHR: 91, high, very small sample size
2006 HHR: 80, moderate, small sample size
Next updates in November and in February. The more owners participate, the more comprehensive and precise these will be.

2008 HHR: 102, high, small sample size

I bought my '08 new in July '08. Current mileage is 48k. We don't drive it as many miles per year since we bought a Kia Soul.
I change the oil myself whenever the OLM hits 50%, which seems to be about every 6 months.
Replaced rear shocks with KYB due to leaking issues.
Replaced front brakes (rotors and pads) at 46k.
Needs new front sway bar end links (name an HHR that doesn't), but it's too cold out to do it myself right now. Plan to do it in the Spring.
Bottom door rust issues just now starting to appear.
Waiting until it's more convenient (or more recalls pile up) to have ignition switch done. Switch has not given me any problems, but I keep the key on its own ring, with nothing else on it.
If EPS becomes a problem, I'll just get a new motor and replace it myself. Much faster and easier than going to dealer.
Dorman makes a 15 dollar part kit to repair the auto trans shifter if it gives me any trouble. I'll just do that myself as well if needed.
No other issues but routine maintenance. This car has been just as reliable, if not more so, as any of my past vehicles, including Jeep Cherokee, Ford Aerostar, Dodge Aries, Geo Prizm, Chev. Cavalier.
I like my HHR. Recalls have been issued for other car makers as well as GM. It's just not as convenient to deal with GM, since there are no GM dealers of any brand in my town. Dealers for other major brands (Dodge, Kia, Toyota, Ford, Nissan) are still here and going strong. That's a shame; I'm not anti-GM, but I'll voice my irritation with them without any reservations.

So, how have these cars been doing lately?
Our reliability stats for the HHR now include owner experiences through March 31, 2015. (Others are nearly a year behind.)
In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year ("low" is best):
2009 HHR: 28, low, small sample size
2008 HHR: 40, low, very small sample size
2007 HHR: 72, moderate, small sample size
2006 HHR: 83, moderate
No stat for a model year? Then we very much need more participants for it. Same for those with small sample size notes. Next updates in August and November.
