Chip in key?

Does my '08 HHR key have a chip in it that needs to be there to start it?

Yep. Should be a little + sign or such on the key shank.

Well, you can start it with a unmatched key. But you would have trouble driving it.

Is it imbedded in the rubber or plastic covering, or in the metal?

metal.

What are you getting at, just ask. 20 questions is getting old. I think most of it is covered in the Owner Manual.

If you have a stock working key and a new cut key that is not programed simply put the working key in start engine shut off insert other key quickly and turn to on the new one should program and start the car at that point. This works on my car.

Only if the new key has a chip in it! That procedure is in the Owner Manual, BTW.

I think the LVJJJ is trying to use a $2 key from HomeDepot. Just a guess, since he doesn't say why he's asking.

I said new cut key that was not programed that implies one with a chip!

I bought 2 keys and 2 fobs from ebay for 20 bucks all 4 work. Local tech programed the fobs for 30 bucks so 50 total for 2 keys and 2 fobs.

The local stealer wanted $226 for 1 programed fob.

Obviously the implication was too oblique for me. A key without Passkey III is a key that needs programming, it just is not capable of it

The subject of the thread is not how to set up a new key; it is if a cheap key will work. The answer to that is in the Owner Manual.

The procedure for a new key is in the Owner Manual and well discussed here, along with all things "fob".

I don't see any reason for this thread to remain open.
