Both of ours are 2.2 but my 10 seems to have better acceleration than my wife's 09. I am happy with the 2.2.

i agree w 843
a good 2.5 catback. intakes really just help a little and TBH a better flowing filter is all you need
the intakes are just a PITA to exchange the filter. if someone made a kit for the screws to make them quick release or remove and put on a K&N filter and that works great. biggest killer of power in the engine compartment is heat getting to the intake. the GMPP intake is the easier does what i was talking about for a pretty penny
the trifecta tune for 200 is the best power mod for the money of all the mods including the CAI and 2.5 exhaust and if you have mods it makes them all work better and gets rid of the learn down factor so it the ECM doesnt average all the mods you do
after that i love rear sway bars for wind stability and fun on curves

My 06 2.4L auto is fine for what it is, a daily driver. If you want a performance car, you get a car with more HP to start with. I don't run street light to street light drags and have no real need for a performance car grocery getter.

If I want to drive a performance car I drive this:

I have had all the performance/muscle cars I need. I was more curious to know if the 2.2 is a pooch or if it can get on the freeway without getting honked at.
I should have stated, I owned a 06 2LT auto with the 2.4, and know its capabilities as a lack-luster 4 banger...if I wanted power, I'd go buy power....but was just wondering, stock for stock, is the 2.2 a decent enough power plant to get out of its own way.

I dont plan ANY mods...it will be a daily driver to only haul some crap from time to time(yard junk/groceries, maybe a day cooler from time to time, and our 2 Boston Terriers...Brenda will drive it mostly, and she's got a heavy foot when it comes to getting up and going...

you have answered my questions...if I find the car we want(appearance) and it just happens to have the 2.2, I think we'd go for it...if she wants more power, I'll slap a tune on it.

thank you all....this is a great place to get opinions...

You'll be happy with a bone stock 2.2, definitely not "pooch-like" when merging.

The big change on the normally aspirated HHR engines occured during the transition from the '06 to '07 and later model years. The 2007 and later Gen II Ecotecs are much livlier than the 2006 engines across the board.

I have a 2006 with a 2.2, and going from it to one of my newer HHR's is a "night & day" difference. As much as I like the '06, it still feels a bit "brain dead" at times.

If you want to "Put Forth" the 2.4L image while having a 2.2L in your HHR, you can purchase an Almost Identical" Tail Pipe Stainless Tip as the 2.4 has from the Chevrolet Parts Dept. This is a Cheap and impressive Upgrade for the 2.2L's Ego.
It is a real High Quailty Piece as well.

Part Number 19169788 ... with Bowtie Logo

With that installed no one but You will know it's not a 2.4L engine and it dresses up the car from that Wimpy Little/Ugly tail pipe that comes on the Stock 2.2L.

Best bet is to just drive one and see for yourself. Granted mine's a 5 speed, but no regrets ever getting the 2.2.
