GPS tracker

I bought a 2011 HHR a few months ago and love it, but a few weeks ago, a little module fell out from behind the dash. Upon further investigation, I discovered that it was wired into the OBD II port. I googled the part number on it, and found that it is a GPS tracker.

Before I got the car, the dealer showed me the carfax which said that it started out at a rental company. I figure they put the tracker on, but I wonder how I can find out if it is still activated. Any ideas?

Did the car fax show the rental company?
How is it wired ? One to power and one to ground?
Be careful the GPS might be wired into the starter circuit.

Yeah, I found a youtube video on how to wire one up, and I'll check it out as soon as the wife gets home with the car. The carfax only says "Major car rental company", not the name of the company.

I'm not worried about anything, just curious.

I would suspect it was deactivated when they auctioned it off the rental fleet!

If the LEDs are on it is activated. But I doubt that their computer tracker is logging it.

If you were worried about it you wouldn't be allowing cell phones in your car.

donbrew: Thanks for the info. I wondered about the LED's being lit. However, this device requires a monthly fee, so I doubt anybody is worrying about a 5-year old car.

The fee is to an internet company the data that travels on the same radio waves that text messages do. Texting is cheap because it rides a carrier that is always there.

It is there, just nobody looks at it for free. We've had a few members that were bothered by things like that.

Thanks for the advice, everybody. Think I'll just leave well enough alone for now.
