Key Code needed for Recall action: URGENT!!

Hi at all,

the Recall "Replace Ignition Lock Cylinder" is reaching us here in Germany.
Now I have a problem, the dealer need the Key Code to initiate the repair and regulation of the costs.
More than a problem because if my imported car, HHR SS, don't get repaired, it will be take out of circulation.

Where to obtain this Key Code?
Maybe stamped on Ignition Cylinder?
By FIN?
Please help, it´s very urgent.

Thanks for Your attention.
Best Regards, Yves.

It is done by the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). GM tracks the keys by the VIN.

Well Yves, I think that contacting GM's German branch directly may be the best way to smooth the waters and allow your HHR to receive the proper parts for the Recall Campaign.

Try contacting them via Opel...

Many, many thanks for Your answers whopper and 843de,

For my other HHR, the LT, my dealer was able to get the right Codes.

My HHR SS car is at the dealer to, Chevrolet service point in Mannheim
but unable to request Key-Code by VIN because it´s a imported car:
for GM or Opel Rüsselsheim, this car is not regularly existing in Germany
(The HHR SS was not sell there).

1. I still want to try the address you gave me 843de.
2. Q: it´possible to ask the key-code by VIN at any Chevrolet dealer in USA?
can someone help me to try this?
3. The dealer of The HHR SS in America is unknown here, by VIN: it is possible to find
out the first dealer/reseller?

Regards, Yves.

The dealer is supposed to order the part from GM using the VIN. Otherwise the dealer is NOT going to get paid, they get paid for working on the car that has the VIN.
It is the VIN that is recalled not the key or for that matter the car.

They should not need the code for 3 reasons
1.) they should get a new matched key and cylinder from GM that is the same code that came off the assembly line.
2.) any locksmith can cut a new key from yours and re-key any new cylinder to the key. They have locksmiths in Germany, I'm guessing.
3.) the code IS the key, it is not a number it is a pattern.

Maybe the translation is not as good as I thought?

Thanks donbrew for Your answer.

I ask/tell my dealer that it´s not important for me to have key who fit in ignition and door,
order any Ignition Lock Cylinder.
The dealer says it´s not the problem, but he need this code to finish online order and to get paid.

Maybe my understanding is not as good as I thought?

Regards, Yves.

Ok. I hope this is just a translation problem but the 1st post says: Recall "Replace Ignition Lock Cylinder".

Now, that is a previous recall that has been upgraded by the now famous
Ignition Switch Recall.
TheFrench. You should really talk with your dealer to be sure you are getting the current and correct recall work done.

The Ignition Switch Recall includes the parts shown below, PLUS a new key cylinder. All of these recall parts are ordered based on the cars VIN number.

Parts in the kit include: new ignition switch, 2 new keys, 2 key rings and the key cylinder(not pictured but included)

The dealer only needs the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and the Recall number to get paid for the work!

Has your VIN been recalled? Do you have a letter from GM? All of the numbers would be in the letter. I am not sure that the SS models are included.

I am beginning to think that the number your dealer is asking for is the "official recall number". You can get that here:https://my.chevrolet.com/na-chevrolet/recalls. Just type your VIN into the box and press the SEARCH button, that will return any recall information needed about your VIN.

Any locksmith in the world can re-key lock cylinders.

Yes donbrew, the SS's are included in both the ignition switch recall and the earlier "good will" key cylinder replacement.

The SS's are NOT included in the power steering motor recall.

Hi at all,

@firemangeorge: thanks for Your intervention, yes I know, both must be replaced,
the dealer is informed about this circumstances to. See both Recall # 140092 and 14113
on the letter from Chevrolet Germany(Opel) Rüsselsheim below, for this car no problem:

@donbrew: thanks that You are thinking about more possibility of this needed number/code,
the dealer says "Key-Code" but I´m not sure to he really need this.
Can only repeat, Code needed to finish online order/transaction.

Yes have a letter from Klintberg & Way, GM Customer Assistance Center but:
-this service is not supposed to know that my car was imported to Germany and
dont have any informations about it.
- this service has informed himself about unofficially imported Chevy HHR´s
and obtain VIN from the german vehicle registration.
- the dealer is contacting this service but I repeat: has not any information about my car.

The link You gave me is very interesting, want see with dealer if this NHTSA #
the needed one is:

Want reporting soon...

Many thanks, Regards, Yves.
