The HHR IMO is a poor choice to tow anything with. There is more to think about, than, is there enough power to move the load, and will it damage the car. How about stopping on a 7% downgrade when something unexpected jumps out in front of you? I know lots tow with the HHR, but wouldn't and shouldn't safety as a primary consideration, sort of say, the HHR is not a good choice? The HHR, however, certainly makes a good tow car behind a motorhome. We do tow our HHR, but its behind a 40,000 pound diesel powered motor home, with air brakes etc, and the HHR is equipped with a proportional braking system.

Towing with HHR

We have towed a U-Haul trailer twice with our 2011 HHR and have gotten along great. The position of the load is important the main thing seems to be weight on the hitch. We have a Curt hitch. This is the second HHR that we have towed with and gotten along quite well.

7%? Most people would hardly see 5%...and as far as that goes there isnt a whole lot of vehicles out there that can "stop" on a 7% grade decently. If its that steep you better be going a WHOLE lot slower then posted speed.

7% grades are not that uncommon on the West Coast. Even a 5% grade would be a challenge to get stopped on, and 5% grades are quite common. Your right about going well below the posted speed limit, really any time your towing. I'm not saying the HHR can't tow, I know it can and does for lots of people, but for me, I'm not comfortable running right at or near the outside margins all the time. Since mine is a five speed, the possibility of towing with it, is off the table anyway.

Why would you not be able to tow with a 5-spd?

Go to www.livinlite.com for dealers near you.Picked mine up in SC brand new.Paid around 8000.00 for it,but it came with a/c(which is needed here in Fl.)and other options. Since it is all aluminan it won't rot or rust, which means it will last a long timeShop around, you can find deals on them.BTW they make them in a 6.0,8.0,8.1 and 10.0 models, you want to stick with 8.1(mine's an 8.1) or below to get under 1000lbs.Also you can get one in black to match your ride.

A manual tranny is probably better for towing than an auto....
