Hi everyone,
Just wanted start a thread on my current project. Decided it would be easier just removing the engine/trans together. I figure I saved myself some time and frustration on installation.

All from ZZP
- Gen 3 LNF
- Stage 3 Turbo Upgrade
( Bullseye 256et, charge piping, 3 bar MAPs, ZZP intake and IC, ZZP BOV)
- ZZP Basic tune (will have further dyno testing/tuning)

While I wait for the new stuff to arrive I started tearing down the old motor. If you saw my earlier thread the original gen 2 had timing chain and overheating issues. I'll post up the tear down asap.

You follow directions well.

Why didn't you just unbolt the struts from the top, like the reverse of a factory install? Or is that a hindsight thing?

nice photo how to, four bolts or six nuts, but the same results.
be interesting to see what caused all the overheating, porosity or head gasket

I didn't really want/need the struts to come out. I figured they're not hurting anything just hanging around.
- removed front cover and the nylon guide from the intake cam had shattered in about 4 places. Judging by the wear, I'd say it'd been broken and ignored for a while. I think they would normally be replaced at the 100k service. I'll try and get some pics and post them up.
-And I'm hoping it's the head gasket, I've got someone locally interested in the motor for their 'balt.

There is no recommended service interval for the timing chains that I've seen. Not even an inspection.

That is a bit odd, since the guides are so flimsy.

Overheating can be caused by the valve timing. Been there.

Could you elaborate a little?

Mine would get up to right around 250 then settle to 220. Would go back and forth. Only drove it 500mi before ripping it apart. 300 of that was the drive home! I've uploaded my timing pics just have to get them over here.

Pulled off the front cover, found a broken nylon guide from the intake side.


Here is the damage a timing chain can do running without a guide. I could hear it slapping around inside, my guess is it's been that way for a while.


And a close up, it's pretty ugly.


Another item I found interesting is the valve cover. I expected to find some milky oil from my high temps and coolant loss. Strange thing is, it's only on the intake side. Fairly clean on the exhaust...by comparison
