break in and mpg
my experience in a new 2001 turbo jetta mpg was about 27 on trips to work mostly highway some stopping no real traffic hangups, from new mileage kept increasing until it maxed at 34 average, it took 10,000 miles to reach the peak mpg, so it will get better, also i highly recommend a top quality full synthetic such as red line or amsoil, turbos can get hot and the best oil is cheap insurance, i change mine every 10,000 miles or 1 yr, and have a happy not so stock 174,000 mile engine using maybe a qt between changes, prolly due to occasional 20 plus lb boost

So far, with only 600 miles on mine,
My mpg is at @ 30.5mpg. I'd say 50/50 city-highway. I like it with the cruise engaged and the (Boost) gauge reads -8 in. Hg. (on the vacuum side) that is with the cruise set at 65 or at 85 mph. So I'm getting almost the same as I'm getting on my '04 Passat with the 1.8 turbo (31-32). And the SS has 90 more horsepower.
I can't wait until this car is broke in to see what kind of mileage I'll be getting.

I've found out that what the DIC reads isn't very accurate. Just divide gallons serviced at fill-up into amount of miles driven since last fill-up. On my first fill-up the DIC read @3-4mpg on the low side. I've also been resetting trip A with every trip and resetting trip B at each tank fill-up. That way the average mpg reading seems to be more accurate. Of course I have only filled up twice, so far.
