When breaking in my old Impreza the mileage sucked while I babied it. Then I guess everything wore smooth, because it got way better after about 1,000-1,500 miles.

Not sure that I noticed with my HHR SS, but then I was breaking it in the hard way triggering boost whenever possible to seat the rings properly. Now I've got around 5,000 miles on it and have an average of about 28-29 mpg, though with mostly highway driving.

I am absolutely amazed how fast the SS gets up to 80 mph on the highway. I know I need to look at the speedo when I start passing people left and right. I just hope I don't end up getting speeding tickets because I don't realize how fast I'm going. They should give out free "get out of jail" cards with the SS!

give it a few thousand miles. My average of city & highway with mostly city is 21 now up from 19. My highway trips are getting better.

I have 3300 miles on her now. It took my Jeep until 18K miles to really get anything close to sticker

I'm not to happy with getting such low mileage considering see is babying the car with only 500 miles on it.
I hope the MPG goes up as we put more miles on the car.
So anyone drive in around town with an average MPG?
Without hypermiling I get 25ish in the city, with moderate hypermiling 30, and with extreme (but not dangerous and selfishness lane hogging) 32 or more depending on the amount of stop signs (not stop lights, they can be handeled by killing the engine).

I respectfully disagree entirely. I can drive city/suburbia at 32+. Only in DC/LA/CHI rush hour does it get difficult to get above 25.

I agree that the City mileage is pretty poor. I have found that you can get a genuine improvement by turning the engine off at long traffic lights (there are two on my commute that I do this on). Turning your engine off at traffic lights is mandatory in most of Europe. If you think this is Baloney, try resetting your avg MPG DIC reading within 30 miles of a TL, then watch the avg MPG countdown while you sit there.

At 4500 miles I average 26+ mpg, mixture of driving with average speed being right around 33mph. Took a 100 mile trip down the freeway, set the cruise at 70mph, got on it once to pass, averaged 34mpg. Always use high octane gas (Shell when I can). Tires start around 31-32 psi and heat up to 34-36 psi this summer.

I'm averaging 24 mpg now, a large percentage of my driving is in heavy traffic. This engine begs to be "short shifted" which I do alot and that's probably why I get pretty good numbers.
