HHR Style what model year do you have...it could be because of the daytime running lamps that were on the early years. They were the turn signal instead of the headlamp and therefore might be wired differently.
What if instead of wiring from front to back markers, if you do this mod the same way but in the rear. Meaning using the rear connections. Then you won't waste all of the wire and having a PITA or a time trying to hide the wires, lol. Here are the wiring diagrams for a 2007.

Because the rear turn signal wire also is used for the brake light, it ends up lighting up when the break is pressed.

Rear Marker Solution

For those that have asked, NxlKing2304 has found the solution for wiring the rear marker lights to work as markers and turn signal and NOT brake lights. You will be using the front turn signal wires connected to the BCM on the passenger side of the center console. The Dark Blue wire to pin 17 for the right side front signal and a Light Blue wire to pin 35 for the left front signal. Use caution as there are 3 Light Blue wires connected to the BCM via connector C1. Pins 14 & 31 also make use of Light Blue wires. The process would remain the same as performed for the front marker conversion. Please use sufficient gauge wire to the rear of the vehicle, at a minimum 18 gauge.

Please confirm that your model year conforms to the use of pins 17 Dark Blue and 35 Light Blue of the BCM connector for the Front Turn Signals prior to performing this effort.

Good job! I know that the BCM Connector from 2006-2008 has not changed, 2009 a lot of changes were made, but i'm not sure if the connectors are any different.

Hello
I'm new here and this is my first post.
I'm from Luxembourg-Europe and have a EU-modified HHR. I want to rewire all the lighting to US-standards. I've already finished the front which was quite easy but the back gives me a headache.
This is what they've done:
Cut off the Turn/Brake and rewired them to the Backuplights which are now equipped with amber bulbs.
Spliced into the 3rd-Brakinglight and wired this to the left and right Brakelights.
The Backuplight is now under the Bumper together with a Rear-foglamp.
The Question is, how did they cancel out the Brakesignal on the Turn/Brake-wire?
They didn't rewire C3/A9 and C3/A12 to C1/35 and C1/A17, what my first thought was.

Completed Rear Marker / Signal Modification

I would like to thank NxlKing2304, HHROwner, and charles04, for their interest, efforts and help on the rear marker mod. I have completed it, works fine. Used 3/8" spiral wire wrap to encase the new wires from the BCM to the rear of the vehicle.

I am attaching an overhead image of the HHR to show the locations of the new wires for the rear marker modification.

As stated in the thread below there are four wires located in the center rear of the vehicle two terminate at each marker light, black and brown respectively, the black are used, same as the front mod. The new wires are connected to the BCM - Pin 17 Dark Blue for the Right turn signal and Pin 35 Light Blue for the Left turn signal both coming from connector C1. Used push pin connections at the rear (male / female) to enable correcting any error, left or right.

In addition please refer to this thread -

Hi
I haven't done anything at the back yet. The car has been modified to a independent brake and turn signal on it's journey to europe. I want to rewire it back to US-standards. I have almost all figured out as described above, I just don't get why the turnsignals don't get a brakesignal anymore. Imagine as if only your 3rd brakelight would work when you hit the brakes.
Thanks

On mine pins 1-18 are the top and 55-72 are the bottom, exactly opposite of what the diagram posted by NxlKing2304 shows, unless of course the connector is turned over after being unplugged. Seeing as I also have a 2007 model I thought everything would be the same, apparently it isn't. The colors seem to be the same as well as the unused pins but the function does not appear to be the same as the diagram says. While pin 17 is a d blu wire it seems it is not the right turn signal lamp supply voltage, it is always on when the park lights are on. Pin 35 is a l blu wire but I have not tested it to see if it is the left turn signal lamp supply voltage. It's been dark here for over 3 hours so I will try to finish in the morning. Who knows, maybe working in the dark has been the problem.

The front lamps work as advertised, if I can just get the rear ones to do the same I'll be good.
