Break-in oil?

Break-in oil?

I never got a straight story on what kind of oil they use in new HHRs.

Ours is a 2007.

I was careful not to change the oil too soon. I assumed that the initial charge was break-in oil. My worry was that the engine would not break in well on even regular motor oil, let alone something like Mobil 1 synthetic.

So what IS the straight scoop?

The days of "Break in Oil" are long gone blacky, with the exception of some trace amounts of assembly lube, the initial oil fill is just plain old GM spec oil.

I remember the days of the first oil change coming between 500 and 1,000 miles to get rid of the lighter weight juice used back in the day to help engines break in. But those days are gone along with 8-Track tape decks, whitewall tires, and vinyl landau tops.

Being that your '07 is somewhere between 6 1/2 to 7 years old depending on its build date, the engine's bearings and machined surfaces have already had plenty of time to break themselves in.

And engines can, and do, break in just fine on full synthetic oils. If they didn't there'd be tons of Corvettes, Benz's, and BMW's with very unhappy owners.

The most important thing to keep your HHR healthy, happy, and serviceable for years to come is regular maintenance. We have members with 200,000-400,000+ miles on their engines, and oil change intervals all over the map, so despite their quirks and frailties....Ecotec engines are sturdy little beasts.

I have a equinox with the 2.4......same motor as the hhr......it has received an oil change starting at 5000 miles with mobil 1 and now has 253,000 on her and still going strong. she is 5.5 years old. corvettes and all high performance chevies come with mobil 1 from the factory so like they said there is no breakin oil. the oil gets changed every 5,000 miles no matter what the percentage left......but its usually around 30%

Look at the dates in left side box.

Not even mentioning the basic silliness of the OP question. He was worrying about break in oil in a 6 year old car, not a new engine.
