when do you replace your tires?

hi all,
ever since i have been driving (im 35) it seems that i have to replace tires more often because of sidewall dry rot. i don't have a garage, so my hhr gets beat down by the rays all day long. when i bought my 2010 hhr in may 2011, it had the OEM firestone tires still on. i rode them to about 70k, and replaced them. the hhr had 34k on it at the time i bought it.
i had bad sidewall cracking, (from dry-rot) and the tread was very low.
i replaced the firestone's with nexen n5000's. i staggered the replacements, the old firestones on back were still good. i didn't rotate them as frequently as i should have.
the front two nexens (that i purchased first) have finally wore out. well, not really wore out so to speak, but have became so noisy i couldn't stand it. i checked them and the wear bars were very close to the top of the tread, and i failed the penny test.
i have replaced the front two nexens with kumho's of simliar tread pattern. got a good price on them, $82.00 a piece on tire rack.

just curious, do your tires make it to the "treadlife warranty" mileage, or like me do you have to replace sooner? just for refrence i average between 18k and 19k miles a year.

Ozone, atmospheric pollutants, and age are the main causes of dry rot in tires. I've always managed to burn off sets of tires long before any sort of age related deterioration sets in.

Because my current tires of choice, Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTZ Ultra-High Performance Radials, have no mileage warranty. They get replaced at 3/32 of tread depth remaining, which works out to 15-20,000 miles of use.

Of course, using my HHR's in SCCA Sanctioned Autocross events, does kill a set of new tires in a weekend if I'm really pushing it on an abrasive surface.

Nothing like having an inch or two of rubber dust built up on the running boards just ahead of the rear fenders, but seeing the look on a Miata Driver's face when a "Porky Tub of an HHR" beats their best time is priceless.

That looks like a good product for UV protection! Have you ever used this Trex08 ?

The original Firestone's went a whopping 25000 miles, and were worn, evenly, to an unsafe condition. Replaced them with four Michelin hydro-edge, tires which have about 25000 on them, and look just as good as the day they were installed. They are supposed to go 90000 miles, we shall see, but if they continue at their current wear rate, I would guess at least 60000 to 70000 out of them, maybe more.

Yes I have, for many years, on all my cars, and never replaced tires because of dry rot. Armor all, tire dressing etc., makes em look good, does nothing to protect them from uv. Tires are an investment, so is a $18 bottle of correct cleaner protectant.
