Why can't you 3D print the the part and have it spray chromed. Then just make your inlay sticker of the middle and shoot clear over it?

That was sort of the original plan, that was till I got the price on scanning/scaling/3D printing. It was pushing $300!

I think I'll shape the plug from wood.

I Think I Got It

Ok boys and girls, after spending waaay too much time on checking out the 3D printing of a smaller 55 Chevy trunk emblem for my V8 car, I got a break thru. A '56 V8 Chevy hood emblem is much smaller because it fits above a gold "V" on the hood. It measured about 7 1\2" wide which is just about correct for the HHR proportions. Putting it on the rear lift gate trim should be pretty simple. I'll mock that up this week-end. The front is going to be much harder and more expensive. I want to stay with the SS grill so I'll need another set of the egg crate inserts to cut up. This won't be cheap as I will probably have to get them from the dealer. It will take a fair amount of surgery to get rid of the "jog" in the grill around the bow tie.

Here's what it will look like

^^^^ Way cool! With all the time and effort put into this I am sure you could find a market to sell them if you could get G.M. licensing.

Nah, this is going to be a one-off. I'll document everything in case anyone wants to follow, but I'm only making one.

I think this idea will actually work

So I cut and sanded the the protrusions off the lift gate trim in the bow tie area and drilled a couple of alignment holes. The parallelogram area under the bow tie needs to be shaped with a porting tool and the top area needs to be filled in. The emblem didn't show up very well so I shot it with primer just to see how it's gonna look.
