T-Handle Shifter

T-Handle Shifter
Ive searched the threads and numerous websites for a B&M or Hurst T-handle shift "knob" for the automatics(with a button to release the lock) and found nothing. Has anyone added one of these styles? I don't want a big bulky t-handle that's going to be rubbing against my leg while driving, but something that will be comfortable to rest my hand on(habit from driving a manual my whole life). I've always put my Hurst knob on all my manuals but finding one for an automatic seems a bit of a challenge. I figure if I'm going to go through the trouble of swapping out the my shifter control for the 09 style with the little cubby, i might as well spruce up the handle.

I've never heard of anyone doing what you're proposing, but its probably not impossible if you have the time to do some engineering/adaptation.
What I'm thinking of is scrounging up a "T-Handle" shifter from a late model front wheel drive Pontiac, you'll be needing the button to activate the latch on the Brake-Shift Interlock.
Here's a shifter from a '99 Bonneville SSEi to give you an idea of what you might want to look for, I'd start with a trip to your local "U-Pull It" junk yard to scope out some Bonneville/Grand Prix/Grand Am shifter assemblies.

Thanks for the info guys, ll do some more research and see what i come up with. Rest assured if i try something, either pass or fail ill post pics. As for the Bonneville, i like that type of shifter handle, but every pontiac ive had or driven, the button on the shifter feels sloppy or loose.

this can b done but with some safety issues..if you took the shifter shaft and added some threads at the top..tech speakn you could thread the b and m handle onto the shaft and depress the button for good..the only thing to beware of is the fact your shifter will not "lock" into place but everything else would work just fine..just dont bump ur shiftr when drivn..the only other way is to bypass the sensor in the shifter shaft..major pita job

The automatic HHR's use the 4T45E transmission, I would assume most of the other GM cars that use this transmission with a T style shifter could be made to work. I know the Grand Am's, Olds Alero, Saturn L series all had T style handles with the 4T45 transmission. The Grand Prix, Lumina, etc. mid size and bigger use the 4T60/65E trans and those shifters may or may not work.
