Neon License Plate Frames

Neon License Plate Frames
Do any of you New Yorkers know if neon license plate frames are legal in our state? I remember seeing them around a couple years ago, but haven't recently...and I was thinking how cool one would look on my HHR but don't want to get hassled.
Thanks!

4. if required to display a number plate on the rear, a white light which shall illuminate the numerals on such plate in such manner as to render such numerals legible for at least fifty feet from the rear. The provisions of this subparagraph shall also apply to trailers.
Section 2b mentions glare and dazzle of lights as well.

instead of changing the plate holders to neon, what about replacing your plate bulb to HID's? Got some bulbs for my altima from http://www.frickinbrite.com/catalog/ and it looks nice and white!

Not sure about NY's laws, even though I live here now. Michigan's laws I know, and neon light plate frames were strictly outlawed except for off-road use (show use). If that's the case here, there are also alternatives to a full-neon frame: I know of one company which makes translucent colored plastic plate frames which, when illuminated by the stock license plate light, will glow around the perimeter of the plate. Just inserting my buck-o-five into this.

I've thought of that myself, but the plastic frames I've seen - well, they wouldn't make it through a few of our summer heat waves without looking awful and probably falling apart. I just gave it up.

Thanks for all the info, folks. I kinda figured neon was no longer street legal in New York. We're regulated to death in this wonderful state!
I guess the exhaust pipe mounted flame thrower is out too~!
