Softer ride for SS
 

I purchased my SS new in 09 and for the most part I am very satisfied with th vehicle. I am 62 and I have recently developed some severe back problems. I would like to know what suspension changes can be made to improve the rather harsh ride of the SS. I understand that there are three suspension ride types available on the HHR. I need a suspension with a soft ride. I do not race. I just go fast occasionally. Any advice is appreciated.

You can change the springs to the F1/F3 springs and you can change the shocks and struts to either the F1 or F3....depending on how soft "soft" you want it. Consider, however, you will give up some handling characteristics.

You can also look for a softer tire, a tire with a "taller" sidewall or change to a smaller rim size to gain more sidewall.

You probably can sell or trade your parts with members who have the components you are seeking.

Wayne, this swap can be done quite easy, KYB struts and lower springs for an LS LT. May I suggest you ride in or drive a lowered LS LT first to confirm this is worth the trouble.
I would keep the FE5 stuff to change back when you sell the SS

You could also go with smaller diameter rims with higher sidewall tires. Depends if you have Brembos, but I believe you might be able to go 16". I'm sure someone else will chime in on this.

I went with 15" wheels, for weight reduction, for racing.

A big plus to this, is that the taller sidewall , makes for a very
pleasant ride, as a DD.

It really is a night / day difference.

Screw those 18" wheels, with the tires that have rubber-band sidewalls.

The OP doesn't say if he has Brembos or not. That could limit him on the rim size choices.

I have a set of fe3 if you want it. I have noticed different tires ride better. 2 that ride nice and smooth are G-max03, and Michelin Pilot Sport as3. I went with bigger size on both...255x40 on the gmax and 235x45 on the Michelins. Much smoother ride, and I only run 30lbs cold.:thumb:

Thanks for all the good information. I think a smaller wheel and a larger tire swap may be the simplest change for ride comfort. I have been considering black rims for a while now since my SS is dark blue. My brake rotors are stock. Will 15 inch wheels fit the front rotors and any suggestions for a good wheel manufacturer?

SS's came with 2 different factory brake options. Standard or the optional Brembos.
If you don't know the difference, one easy way to tell is which transmission do you have? The Brembos were only available as an option with the 5 speed. The autos only got the standard SS brakes.
