Nope. That is really, really hard to do. How lucky are you?

I've been thinking about taking mine off for a couple weeks now. Never thought about taking a short cut.

After it broke I looked at it. The top portion at least on the 08 LS is plastic and is held to the rest of the gear shifter with 4 tabs. I don't know if I just hold it different, but it always felt a little weak.

The top half of the 5-speed shift knob in my 2007 HHR LS broke off at the tabs several months ago. So far, I have just put a piece of a plastic bag inside the knob to get sort of a "friction fit" - it stays put for a while, then I have to do it again. I have been hesitant to use an adhesive.

The top came of mine too about a year ago. Always felt a little loose like you could pull up on it a bit. When it finally came completely off you can see it is held on by only 4 small plaster tabs. I had it replaced under warranty and now the replacement is starting to come loose. They are clearly crappy. If this one comes completely off like the first it will be after my warranty is up so I guess it is off to the aftermarket I go. Too bad as the chrome look knob adds to the retro look IMHO.

That was the first thing I replaced on my HHR. I couldn't stand the feel of the Chrome top and the seem for it to the lower part. Also thought it looked and felt cheap. I replaced it with a MOMO leather one (for sale if anyone is interested) which I liked a lot. Then I installed the TWM short shifter and am now using the knob that came with it.

Shifter Knob

Hi. I had same issue as you. The dealer just glued it back on. No problem ever since. Only sad thing. I thought my knob was metal not plastic. I've had to many issues with my vehicle from brakes to suspension and my knob. Brakes shaved 4 times, suspension 2 and shifter knob once. To me I've got a lemon.

How, exactly, do you get the leather boot to release from the base of the shifter nob? I heard about the "give it a quarter turn and it will drop down" theory, but nothing works yet.

I want to see the plastic tabs, so I can cut threads onto the steel shifter shaft. Then I can add an after market knob of my choosing to my car.
