Check your dimmer switch/knob LEN, the symptoms you're having are "textbook" for the switch being turned all the way down. When the Auto Lights system decides to flick the headlamps on or off depending on what the ambient light sensor is seeing, you'll lose your DIC and head unit illumination.

I've had the same problem for a long time & yes I checked the dimmer switch as the dealer suggested also. I do believe it has something to do with the sensor, but since I can't recreate the problem at the dealer they can't fix it.

I have an '09 LS/AA5 and mine does the same thing. It has to do with the sensor on the dash. I don't know what the time frame is but the sensor seems to need a "constant " either light or no light for an unknown period of time to change the panel lighting. You can be in bright sun and cover the sensor and it does not immediately change the light. I have tried doing this but I never cared enough to see how long it actually would take to change the state of the dash panel lighting. It always seems to end up turning the dash panel lights to the correct setting if I have my dimmer set correctly. I'm good with that. Learn a little patience it is not an immediate on/off situation, at least that is my view point.
