electric power steering go's out while driving

hello everyone,
help, my girlfriend has an hhr and the power steering keeps going out while driving.she has to stop the car , turn it off , then restart it.on the restart the steering works but then after a while it stops. now the car is at the dealer. who said they have not seen this problem before. its the electric motor that has to be replaced, $1600.00 her warrenty is up by 4000 miles.does anyone have any input on this matter . i dont think is the motor.
thank you, all

Another possibility is a bad steering column. Which is a $1000 repair. You need to take it in and get a diagnosis done before your warranty expires.

talk to the service manager they are pretty cool most of the time my wifs suburbans heater core went out at 46000 and I think the warnty was up at 40000 ask for a policy ajustment and the manager said that they would cover the labor and I would have to pay the dealers price for the parts.I agreed and when I went in I said that this was sort odd that this happened at only 46000 or what evr the milage was I dont rember and explained that I have a blazer that I just did a heater cor on but it had 300,000 miles on and thought that this was way to soon. So they sais to let them check it out and they would call me they called me a day later and said it was ready to pick up so I was still expictiong to pay for parts and they gave me my keys and I pulled out the check book and they said that they didit under warnty. So I thanked them and said this is why I have brought all 3 chevys here for service and have purchased 2 of them from this dealer. Granted the Suburban was only 2 years old maybe 2.5 cont remember.

My mistake, I miss read your post. Call the service manager and politely ask for assistance and they may cover it.
