Good Evening

Took my 2010 HHR to the dealership today for the power steering message. Now being told that the steering column needs to be replaced due to a faulty communication with the module. $900 repair. Seems steep to me, Also can I push GM for the recall since it is the same issue?
Advise greatly needed.

Thanks

That would make me suspicious that they are just trying to push an extra sale thru the service dept..

Do, or did, all the controls on the column and steering wheel work ok before they took it in for service?

Have they already replaced the steering assist motor, and then encountered a further problem figuring it is the steering column?

Hmm We're caught in a trap, did they let you drive it home? Suspicious statement to make and the power steering motor is mounted ito the steering column there is no module I know of, I'd send a PM to Chevrolet Customer Service, they should get involved for you.

And welcome to the site

Same issue as what? Some models have the column replacement, some don't.

Exactly what "power steering message"?

Exactly what does "faulty communication with the module" mean? What is supposed to be communicating with what module?

It sounds to me like your dealer technician is fishing. Maybe it's a slow week.

I just checked in Mitchell; the only reference to a "module" is the "Torque Angle Sensor" that needs to be inspected if there has been an accident involving sheet metal damage or driver side air bag deployment.

But, $900 sounds sort of cheap for a new steering column installed.

Could be meaning the sensor. I think when I was asking questions about replacing my PS motor, someone told me it could be the motor itself or the sensor in the steering column.

I checked the old interweb and RockAuto has a listing for Airtex steering sensor for some '08 HHR's

If you still have the letter informing you of the power steering warranty extension I think there is a phone number to call GM with questions.
