? Heater core leak
I have a 2010 HHR that has a coolant leak in the engine compartment near the passenger side fire wall. Don't know if it is a heater core leak or leaking from some place else. When the heater is by passed, there is no leaking.

Do you mean that you disconnect the hoses to the heater core? That is the only way to bypass the heater core. The temp switch controls air flow over the core.
The 2 hoses that go to the firewall are the coolant feed and exit from the heater core.
They are center/driver side of the firewall.
There is a drain on the passenger side firewall for the A/C condensate.
Are you losing coolant?

When the heater lines are connected and the heater is operational, there is a coolant leak in the engine compartment back by the firewall. It appears to be coming from a line that has partial insulation on it. This line appears to run across the back of the firewall. If the heater core is by passed, there is no leak.

Once again, by bypassed; you mean hoses disconnected and blocked to the heater? The temperature control knob does not control the flow of hot water.
There is only 1 semi insulated tube that runs across the firewall that I can think of; that is a brake line.
There are 2 hoses to the heater one of them has insulation on it. Both of them run straight from the t-stat housing.
I am not sure what your question is exactly; if you have found the leak replace whatever part is leaking.
It would probably be easier for me if you would use more words. I'm too old to figure out what text talk might mean.

Like Donbrew, I don't see a question being ask. Only the statement that there is a leak.
Anyhow. In the picture below, the red oval is where the heater hoses connect. Those hoses will have visible tension clamps.
The blue oval is where the AC lines hook up. Those lines DO have insulation on them.
Maybe the OP can come back with a true question and where the leak is and what the fluid is.
