[Hi. My name is bernadette. I just purchased a used 2009 HHR LS on June 15 from a chevy dealership in PA (delaware county area). I currently hear a crunching noise & another noise (that reminds me of when we would put palying cars in between the spokes of a bike). The car was in the shop on the 17th they thought it was the rotor - they shaved them. I took the car back to the dealership yesterday morning: they thought it was the axel (they took it apart and put a new one it), NOPE that wasnt the cause. The car is still in the shop they will work on it again on monday UGH UGH. (i have a loaner car) HAS anyone ever heard these noises. THANKS

Probably a hub/bearing. I don't know why a Chevy dealer would go through all of that and miss a bearing though, you gotta remove the hub/bearing to remove the axle. Unless you are getting part names muddled up (it happens).

The other things that comes to mind are: water pump, timing chain, chain tensioner/guides. These would be heard engine running, but not in gear.

Oh, just remembered the totally obvious one: flex pipe.

I'm wondering what would be the difference in noise between a bad wheel bearing and bad tires.

I've got a noise consistent with rotation of the wheels but it doesn't necessarily get louder with increasing speed. The 2009 HHR has 60k miles. I bought new tires about 15 months (~20k miles ago), but the tires were really cheap.

The car needed pads and rotors so I replaced them last week. I was kind of hoping the bad rotors were the source of the noise.

Jack the front end up push/pull at 12:00 and 6:00. If you can feel ANY motion it is bearings (this works best when the pads are out, or the calipers are rotated up). Sometimes you can get the wheel to turn if you put the trans in neutral with both wheels off the ground, and fell/hear. Don't forget to check the rear bearings, basically the same.
