Ignition switch

Ignition switch
I have read a number of ignition problems with the key stuck and can not remove. My problem is I can not start the car. Key does not turn the switch. Have tried everything I know from tapping the key to moving the steering wheel up and down and nothing works. The switch needs to be replaced and a locksmith cost is 275.00 plus tax. Has anyone every replaced one by them selves?? If so how had is it. I can purchase the part for around 45.00.

If your still under 36,000 on your 09 it will get replaced under warranty. I just had mine done today at 34,083. The tech said it was so bad that when he took it out it exploded into pieces and disintegrated. I only just had the issue pop up-there was no warning & I only have the key & the fob together, no other weight on the key ring.
I have it on "good authority" that once you have it replaced it will never happen again. Once a year just use some graphite, you can get small tubes from a bicycle shop.

Here's a thread on replacing the switch yourself, if you attempt this repair, it is vitally important to disconnect the negative battery cable and leave it disconnected for a minimum of two minutes before commencing the repair procedure.
It is important to treat any work around the SIR components, like the airbag in the wheel, carefully. There is a name for folks who don't treat airbags with respect, they are called "Organ Donors".

The thread link above may not work for the OP. As one of the steps is:
"Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position."The OP states he cannot turn the key at all.
Maybe why this repair/replacement costs so much at the dealership?
