Not very thick. I doubt that's a spec you can look up since it's not an even thickness across the top.
Don't know about the Ecotecs, but the few broken automotive pistons I've seen I would guess about 1/8-1/4 inch at the thinnest part.

Yeah, I agree. They engineer as much mass as they can out of them. That's one of the reasons for the shorter side skirts in recent years as well.

I have a piston out of a GM built EMD 16-567D1 2-Cycle Diesel locomotive "Prime Mover", it makes a nice garbage can in my office.

The "567" in the engine designation indicates a 567 cubic inch displacement per cylinder, dropping the piston on your foot is not recommended.

The bore is 8 1/2", the stroke is 10", total displacement 9,072 cubic inches.

Pretty amazing to need a locomotive to move a locomotive engine around.

Does that thing drive the wheels, or just a generator?

My son-in-law seems to think he never needs to check his oil, he thinks he will just wait for the "light" to come on and then add it. I have told him numerous times if the light usually comes on in this motor it is probably finished.

I have gotten the engine ready to put the Head on now BUT have to wait until they get enough money saved to buy it,I already have all the other parts and such. I will come back once I get it going and report on how it is doing.

The things we do for our relation especially for our children and grandchildren

After this is all done it will end up costing them $600 in parts, they were leaking oil before this even happened and also losing water,it looks like they losing the water from a bad head gasket and the oil from a bad crankcase/harmonic balancer seal.
The block deck checked out to be good and not warped and the pistons measured correct so no bent rods.

This car just needs to last a couple of years,my daughter graduates in a little under a year (she is going to be a Nurse) so once she gets a great job they can get a decent car/cars.

Remanufactured Head is on it's way.

I noticed while cleaning the deck that there was some blue around some of the passages,it looks like the dealer tried to use some Blue Devil or some type of head sealer,it doesn't surprise me as this dealer seems shady anyway.

I also noticed it had a MLS black Head Gasket,do these come from the factory this way?
