my previous post was about the high side valve. i got it out &replaced it by using a 13 1/2 mm socket.i replaced with new valve. now after pulling vacum on the system &letting it stay,i am showing a leak on the low side service valve ie shrader valve.would some one here on the forum please tell me what the heck is the difference between a $19.00 gm part and a regular shrader valve that is used in tubes service equip etc.can i not use a regular valve as long as i match up the correspond length etc.

Well back in the days of R-14 refrigerant(not used in HHR'), the Schrader valves in A/C systems had to have "Buna Rubber" seals so the oil in the sytem that lubricates the compressor would not "attack" the valve seals and O-rings causing massive leaks.

While HHR's use R-134a refrigerant, I'd be extremely reticent to "go cheap" and use a Schrader valve not meant for use with refrigerant and compressor oil.

A catastrophic leak will be obviously something to avoid, losing the refrigerant charge is bad enough, but killing the compressor and filling the system with metal particles would be worse.

Plus you're then going to need a system flush and a new Receiver/Dryer.

Saving a few bucks, can sometimes bite you in the Keister.

Get the proper valve, the oil will attach and eat the oring on the tire intended schrader valve.
And pardon my OCD but R14? But, It was R12, the old freon from back in the day? And now we use R134A

Yeah Oldblue, I'm sure Mike meant R12.

Just remember that Mike(our fearless leader) is the same guy that can't swing a hammer straight.

Yes I meant R-12, but suffered a bit of "Brain Flatulence", it comes with the grey hair and advancing years.

Being that I use an i-Pad almost exclusively, can't blame the left thumb which I somehow mistook for a ten penny nail the other day.

Left hand holds the "Pad" while I type on the virtual keyboard with my right hand, on a good day, I can "poke" at 50 words a minute.

Not bad, considering in the "Olden Days", I was good for 60 words per minute in 11th grade typing class.

I still miss those old IBM Selectrics, bullet proof machines, made by 'Muricans with actual metal and everything.

I figured that was the case! I took the grade nine typo class but just to be in the same class as girls , but I did manage to stop staring at them and pay attention enough to get a 90

You had ELECTRIC typewriters? In eighth grade we had to get like 50 WPM on manual machines, it was a required course.

Ours were manual Remington's, and 50 wpn was the required minimum

We also has manual typewriters in Junior High and High schools. I'm thinking that OB, Don and I might have a year or two on you, Mike.
