Slight clunk in steering column when turning

My HHR has a 63K on and and just started to notice that *sometimes* when I take a turn either left or right I get a slight clunk that I can feel in the steering wheel...doesn't do it all the time but is this a sign of something bigger and badder to come?

Also finally need to get the brakes done...hitting them at 70mph has turned into a shake, rattle a roll extravaganza literally....wheel will shake right out of my hand almost...man..the brakes are pretty bad...when I traded the Matrix in at 64K not even a hint of pulse or shake

Greetings Goose, Have someone take a look at the steering column shaft under the hood or it might be the electric steering motor. I had to have my steering shaft replaced on my 07. About the brakes - sounds like warped rotors. I would have the brakes looked at before it damages the hub bearings. If that happens - the whole hub assembly has to be replaced. Good luck and safe motoring.

Goose, I do know that some of these have had problems with the intermediate shaft. THat might be your clunk problem but a mechanic will have to look at it to be sure. And 63K out of brakes? That's not bad at all. I wish I got that out of any of my cars (I've owned mostly GM and Hondas and they all had sh*tty OEM rotors).

Feels like when I turn the wheel on the way back I get the clunk...I suppose this is not a warranty item eh?

Any ballpark ideas on cost to repair this?

Luck was on my side - fixed under warranty. I have not had the problem since the Intermediate Steering Shaft was replaced. But if that is your problem - make sure they get the steering wheel aligned right. I had to take mine back once because the steering wheel was not in the original position – just felt wrong when I drove it.
