Temp gauge and a/c stoped working
today i noticed my temp gauge went to zero shortly after that my a/c went to hot. stayed that way for two or three hours, then i turned the car off for 5 hours when i returned it still did not work, about 5 min of driving time and cold air came on and then the temp gauge started to work. dealer said they are not connected.. a little fishy!!!! help

it's the gauge only it came back on and was working two hours ago, i understand that the thermostate will stop your a/c from working correctly, so am thinking it was stuck open causin the motor to run cold and shutting down the a/c it must have un stuck itself and closed allowing the motor to warm up all is well right now.. guess i'll have to change the thermo shortly

@blue car, I have read your posts about your situation with your HHR. You posted that the dealership said that these two things were not related. Did you have them repair what was causing this to happen or are you seeking to do this yourself?

Blue - you can switch your DIC to the engine Temperature to monitor the temp as the engine warms up - when my thermostat failed (stuck open) the temp would slowly rise then display "----" and the analog gauge would bottom out.
With mine, it seemed that the colder it was outside, the more likely the condition would happen. Due to the engine not getting up to proper operating temp fast enough.
Good luck with the fix - and Sleeper has already posted the good link for ya.
Cheers man

Just a word about the thermostat replacement, Replaced on 8/20/10. Just had the same problem happen again. The replacement went bad, it was from an auto parts store. They don't warranty this part. But a replacement was the fix.

Check the accordian-like exhaust pipe directly between the engine and the firewall - that is the flex-pipe. And they are known to fail after time.
Have a friend block the exhaust tip at the back of the car, with the engine running - it will help you pinpoint the source of the leak.
BTW: Tagging onto an existing thread is not the best way to get an answer to an unrelated issue. It would have been best to start a new thread.
Hope you find that leak.
ps: if it is the flex-pipe, it includes the Catalitic converter and your chevy dealer will cover it under the emissions warranty if your car falls within the mileage guidelines. Otherwise, any muffler shop can either replace the pipe including the cat, or can weld on a short replacement flex section.
