HHR Freezing up :(

We're not talking about ice building on and around the door frame. We're talking about water runoff from the roof & windshield that flows & freezes in between the front fender and the door, creating an ice dam that gets crunched by the front bottom part of the door when it opens.
But haven't noticed that either. I will look mine is never parked in a heated space.

Tell me something...what kind of silicone are we talking about? Is it safe on paint?? Will ice not stick to this if I spray the hinge and running board area with it? Running out of things to try...so think this may be one of the "less expensive" methods. Appreciate all the input.

I've always had that "creaking" sound in the winter as it scrubs the ice off, but this is the first winter we've actually had a problem getting the door open. Fortunately, I stopped my wife from forcing it too far, but the bottom corner did get bent a little.
Took it to the car wash and used the high pressure rinse to melt all the ice out of that corner so I could get it open enough to get the ice out. Yeah, it's a design flaw, IMO, one of a few on this car. When it warms up, I'll have to work on the door to get the edge back in line.
For now, all we can do is be more diligent about clearing the snow off the front of the car so it doesn't accumulate there as it melts.

A couple weeks ago we had a really granular kind of snow. When I opened the passenger door it looked like somebody had dumped a box of Ivory Snow in the area under the hinge and above the rocker. No running boards.

I agree with Dream HHR...my remedy for this since '07 has been to wax the door frame areas on all the doors and hatch in the fall (which helps with seals sticking) I keep an eye on the ice build up on the forward part of the front doors. When it's getting worse due to heavy or frequent snows here in Windsor ON area, I park it in the garage at home and thaw it out. Keep the roof free of ice and snow. Sunny days are the worst for water running down into all the doors & hatch and that front area.
