might just be me but stuck above the instrument panel seems like it would be in the way...

I agree with the IgottaWoody as well. Too hot in the summer to keep it in the cubby bin. As well as mounting it by the vents advertises that you have a GPS. I make sure that after i remove my gps (and since i use a little spit on the suction cup to get it to stick really good its suction mark is a little moist) i take something in the car, usually my oakley sunglass pouch and rub the mark off of the window. I don't need someone breaking into my car for the gps.

My understanding is that it is now illegal to mount these on the windshied in California. Anyone else heard this?

Have a Garmin C330 modified the mount a little bit and have it sitting in the glove box drilled a hole for the power cord and it runs down behind the panel to the cigarette lighter. I'll try to post pics.

I suction cup the GPS to my forehead and then look in the rearview mirror.

you could as long its within a “seven-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield” on the passenger side or Within a “five-inch square in the lower corner” on the driver’s side.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc26708.htm

A portable Global Positioning System (GPS), which may be mounted in a 7-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver or in a 5-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver, if the system is used only for door-to-door navigation while the motor vehicle is being operated and outside of an airbag deployment zone.

I have mine like twistrman a tomtom XL. looking for a more permanent solution for the power cord.
