P0299 Code and Waste Gate Adjustment

This is releated to my previous thread "Wondering When it would Happen" but that thread took off into left field. I mentioned that I noticed the car being lazy so when I switched the RPD to boost I noticed I didn't have any. It was a hard fault, not intermittent. The next day I got the Engine Trouble Light. The car ran smooth but didn't have any power. RPD would indicate 260 Hp before but would only indicate 75 Hp now. Stopped by the dealer to get the code and it was the P0299 code which I see a lot of on the forum. Searched the forum and came acrossed the TSB about waste gate rod adjustment. Figured I give it a try. I started to shorten the rod a turn but I think I felt and heard a slight little pop like it may have been stuck. I shortened the rod a turn and took it for a ride. Seemed to fix the problem? Would make 18 psig in 2nd gear (5 speed). I flat foot shifted from first to second and it fell on its face and no boost again. Came back home shortened the rod another turn, took it for another spin. Probably the best it has ever run. Flat foot shifted from 1st to 2nd and it fell on its face with no boost again. This time I pulled of the road, shut the car off and restarted it. Ran good all the way home. I have about 3/4inch between the bottom map sensor and the AC compressor. Going to put a spot of grease on the map sensor wires and try it again to see if it transfers to the AC compressor on hard acceleration. Does anybody know in which direction the waste gate is open or closed? When the engine is off,the diaphram valve is compressed. I'm assuming that it extends to either open or close the waste gate?

posted this before you may also want to take a good look at the actuator.

I had the P0299 code they adjusted my wastegate and it worked for a bit.

ended up being a crack in the actuator

I'm pretty sure the Wastegate is open when the engine is off. I had this same code and it ended up being the actuator was half way unplugged.

Thanks. I cleared the code and it hasn't come back. Car runs fine but will only mak 17 PSIG of boost at best. I'll live with it.
