did my oil change, ran it a few minutes to cycle the new oil, went to shut her down and the key would not turn, key is stuck in the running position and had to disconnect the battery to shut her down! cant turn the key. Bought my 09 in Feb of 2013 paid in full @ the Boerne Texas dealership and was told the previous owner was a service tech @ the dealership. From ChevyMgr's post....

"12089

Special Coverage

MODELS: 2007-2008 Chevrolet Cobalt
2008-2009 Chevrolet HHR
2007-2008 Pontiac G5

CONDITION
On some 2007-2008 model year Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5, and 2008-2009 Chevrolet HHR vehicles may develop a binding condition between the ignition lock cylinder and the housing. If this occurs, it may be difficult to turn the ignition key and/or remove it from the ignition. If the vehicle is running, the driver may not be able to turn the vehicle off.

SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT
This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 120,000 miles (193,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership. Dealers are to replace the ignition lock cylinder. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer. For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after April 19, 2012 are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to April 19, 2012 must be submitted to the Service Contract provider."

Page 2-24 in your owner's manual details how to release the key, if your manual is missing click this link to download a PDF copy.

Call the local GM dealership Service Department. It probably is a covered repair.

Search "key stuck" you will find many threads on this issue.

As I understand the "ChevyMgr's post.." it seems to take effect as of April 19, 2012 and the ten year period will end based on the year of your car and/or 120K miles. Any repairs that were done before that date must be reviewed for reimbursement. I think Babette is well within the requirements unless the '09 has more than 120K on the odometer.

I have a '09 that I just had to replace my power steering motor with 60K on the car. I have my fingers crossed on the ignition/key issue. It's kind of a catch 22 tho because there is good odds that sooner or later the ignition will bind and it is much better to have GM foot the bill. Seeing that the problem has been admitted I think the free replacement should be covered for as long as GM must carry the part. If only the car would let you know that it's about to happen so you could head for a dealership

You shouldnt need any documentation provided your vehicle was made during their specified window of poorly made parts, GM is well aware of the issue. One dealer I went to said they would look at it, if it didnt correspond exactly to the bulletin they would have to charge me for diagnostics. I went to another dealer and told them the problem, they said "no problem" and I was in and out in 45 minutes. Guess which dealer got my approval on the survey they usually send out.

They are supposed to tow it for free also. The dealer will have access to all of the needed info on your car, date of first title etc. They have computers and the internets now. However, the owner of the vehicle as of around 10/12 would have gotten a letter from GM telling all about the repair.

Not even mentioning your bumper to bumper warranty, which is documented in your Owner Manual.

You will find that waving printouts at the service advisor will only get you negative attention!

No recall ever issued, just special warranty coverage, see post #2 above.

To unstick your key, go to page 2-24 of your owner's manual, if you don't have a manual, click the link below to download a free copy. Just click your model year....
