Talking HHR SS vs. BMW M5

So there I am, crusing on the 118 freeway in Southern California. I'm trucking along at a sedate 80mph in a 65 zone just like everyone else on the freeway when a guy in a decked out BMW M5 comes up on me. I'm in the fast lane, so he climbs up on my tail, swings out into the number 2 lane and starts surging ahead and slowing down repeatedly whilst staring at me through his side window. After about 45 seconds of his nonsense I decide to take him to school. I downshift to 4th and floor it, lunging away and quickly outpacing him by several car lengths. He hung in, never gaining ground while I took my little HHR all the way to the speed limiter. Having proved my point I let off and let him catch up. As he screams by, I notice that his license plate says, "MRQWICK", and the car is covered in all sorts of "performance" stickers. Poor MRQWICK was feeling pretty well shamed and took the next off ramp with his tail between his legs.

I guess he didn't realize that even though our cars are rated at almost identical horsepower, his 265hp vs. my 260hp, and our cars are within 100lbs of each other, The HHR being a little more portly, that my turbo would put power to the wheels far faster than his naturally aspirated 6cyl could even dream of.

I believe that MRQWICK got a lesson he'll not soon forget.

*Disclaimer: Street Racing is BAD! You should never do it!*

"MRQWICK" may not be a reference to his car. It may be a nickname that a girlfriend gave to him.

Thanks for representing. I wondered how the lowly bread van might fare against the m5-ers exhibiting such jacka$$ery.

What year M5 was this? They have been using V8 adn V10 400-500 HP engines for about a decade now. Well since 1998 and 311+ I6 from 1989 till 1997. Did you mean to say older M3 before the new V8 400+ hp newest ones?

From a roll in the upper speeds like that I can see you beating some of these. I was able to hold off a 350Z with my STOCK 2gdsm rated at 210hp from an 80 mph roll on the freeway. BUT even after my modding to near 290whp I still got my arse handed to me by a 2005 M5 with its 500hp V10 from a roll. And from a standing start he left me like there was no tomorrow. When he slowed down I saw his young son laughing at me lol. I was laughing at myself too for even trying lol. That same car had no issue with the 333hp M3's from a dig nor a roll.

Hmm, maybe it was just an M5 badge and not an M5. If I was worried about being clowned by a (real) M5, perhaps that is justified.

Nope, M5 with the old nose the E34 models that they made from 1989-1995 So I guess I was wrong, it had 311hp not 265hp. I guess that makes it a little worse for him.

I agree, one of the 2005-2010 E60 V8 models with 500hp would likely of had me for lunch in very short order.

It had the correct wheels and bodywork. I have a friend that is a BMW junkie so I'm getting pretty good at spotting fakes.

I'm not as car savvy as I wish I was. I'm not sure where I stand with my HHR SS when I look at other cars. It seems quicker than the average car, for sure. I know there are a lot more people in my way than there used to be.
