Engine Failure

Need some advice. 2009 HHR SS - 50,000 miles on it. The engine threw a rod today - into the oil pan. I need to replace the motor now. I am being told $4500 to replace with a used motor and $8500 with a new motor (only GM sells the 2.0 liter motor from what I understand)

$8500 is what the car is worth on a trade in so I am hesitant to do that.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

That would be my suggestion as well.

Thanks guys, I have placed call to them to discuss options.

Also, by chance, would GM help with the cost of this? Do we know if there is a recall on some of the motors or anything? Or do I chalk this up to bad luck.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to contact GM about it and see what they have to say. If you have a good relationship with your dealer, and have used them for a lot of the servicing that really helps - they might be inclined to go to bat for you.

Having a full list of service items done over the years would also help your case with GM itself.

I'm not aware of any recalls, but there maybe some TSB's on the SS motor. One of the more SS-knowledgable members here might help you out better with that than I can.

Any idea what led to the failure?

SS engines had porosity issues in the cylinder block in 2008, but haven't heard of rod issues in any years, but a talk to your GM dealer may help but a 6 year old car, I doubt they will pay for the parts or the labour.

You are correct, GM while helpful with information, will not assist, which is understandable as they now consider the car to be 7 years old. They were surprised to hear of this issue with such a low mileage car.

Cause of the issue is unknown at this time. It was running great up until it broke.

I spoke with ZZPerformance yesterday and they were very helpful and knowledgeable. I was really impressed and appreciate you guys recommending them.

More research ahead this weekend to determine what I will do next.
