Tune with or without GMTU sensors?

I'm confused. Please help all you smart tuners...

Looks like you can get a tune from Trifecta or other tuners with or without having already installed the sensors from the OEM GM tune.

Why are the sensors needed? What advantage do they bring?

If I don't expect to do much more for performance, do I need the new sensors?
(e.g. maybe a cat-back muffler someday, but not much else)

I'm just trying to maximize value for dollar, and that GM tune sure seems pricey.

The sensors will allow ECM read higher boost pressure. They are also known as 3-bar map sensors. Stock sensors are 2.5 bar. 3 bar sensors plus trifecta budget tune= best bang for your $. You can buy the sensors at crateenginedepot.com.

Looks like you can find Trifecta custom tune for $300.
Would a custom tune even be worthwhile with only the 2.5 bar sensors?

The price difference between budget and custom looks like $100, same as for the sensors.

The sensor connectors look pretty straight forward. How difficult is the install? Is this a DIY for your average "I can connect things, bolt things on, but won't be able to react to problems" kinda guy?

Any other opinions out there, or even a Portland OR area shop recommendation if I get nervous about install?

Thanks, I'm dreaming of Christmas presents for myself.

Its plug n play, but ( there is always a but) that lower sensor is a pita to get to. Hire a small child to help. Lol. You may get a little more finger room by undoing the bottom radiator brackets.

Can you post the link for these sensors on crate engine depot? All I can find related to the sensors on this website is the entire stage kit for Cobalt/HHR/Solstice, no listing for purchasing individual sensors. Can they be bought by themselves?

I think he means this one:
http://www.crateenginedepot.com/Coba...0H-P17740.aspx

In other words, $100 for the sensors etc., $400 for the GM tune.
That's list price of a custom tune from Trifecta.

Hmmm grumble small child to help install... PITA... daily driver... Trying to decide how much I want to sign up for.

One of the reasons for going with the GM upgrade is because the car's warranty will remain intact.
Going with an aftermarket tune "could" void any warranty claims.

Yes, you would need those connectors in the the link above and these sensors:

A custom tune can be done with the 2.5 maps but you are limited to about ~22 psi. I went with the GMTU originally (now trifecta tuned)and wish I would have went the route I suggested. The power difference between the GMTU and trifecta budget 3bar tune is marginal.

And keep in mind, once you install the sensors, you cannot drive the car until it is tuned for the sensors.

Going from a stock tune to a 3-bar trifecta tune.....u will crap your pants lol.
