Turbo Question

I have some plans up my sleeve, but need some questions answered before I can start on anything.

Here goes:

1. Who is the manufacturer the turbo on our SS's?

2. What is the part number for it?

3. Do any other platforms use the exact same turbo? (Cobalt,Solstice,Sky,Saab?)

4. Is it difficult to get at and or remove?

Thanks in advance!

It's very easyy to get at and yes those platforms use the same turbo. Also Audi uses this turbo as well and I think a few others.

It's a K04 Turbo

Honeywell makes the K04 TC. You may also find a similar one under Air Research as they are the aftermarket name for the Honywell brand. They make almost all the OE Turbo's.

While GM and others may use this there can be some changes in the housings and set up. The main part may be the same or share the same internals.

Sorry My bad!!!

I had an old spec sheet of the 2010 engine update that did not happen called the LNY vs LNF. They were going to change to the Honeywell-Garrett GT25RS at one point.

The BW K04 is correct for the LNF.

I dug around and found the info on a spec sheet from GM and got it confused with the LNF. There were plans to to expand the engine to 2.1 and go to a new style turbo. But I think the money issues killed off this idea. The sheet I was given was showing 300 HP for this combo.

Sorry My mistake.

The Borg Warner on our vehicles are the best KO4 you will find, why you may ask? Well its one of the largest KO4's made for automobile applications and on top of it we have a twin scroll design.
General thought around the LNF world is to upgrade to totally different turbo charging manufacturer or upgrading your current KO4 to a KO4+ through BTF racing (which consists of a larger billet compressor wheel).
Many choose the first route because a turbo wheel upgrade runs $800+ by itself and is only a 40-50 hp upgrade (a turbo charger from a entirely different manufacturer can yield 100+ hp with supporting mods). But the KO4+ does retain stock appearance, which is helpful for service calls at your local nit picky dealer.

looks like there are bunch of places offering the comp. wheel upgrade. Send yours to them, or send the money + core charge.
example: http://btfstore.co.cc/product_info.php?products_id=32

I like the idea of the turbo appearing stock. Appears the wheel allows higher rpms.

Well the stock turbo run's out of steam around 5500 rpm, the wheel upgrade will let you go past 7k rpms if you reprogram your rev limiter to let you. Personally I wouldn't go past 7k rpm, there have been a few guys with cobalt ss/tc's reving that high (and a little higher 7.2k) multiple passes at the drag strip regularly on stock valve train. 6.8k might be a safer bet if your worried about breaking things.
