2.2 or 2.4? how can ya tell?

Hey all, is it possible to identify this as a 2.2 or 2.4 by the pics? Just bought it off FB marketplace, seller thought it was a 2,2 but pulled it from a wrecked car years ago and couldnt recall. Got a decent deal on it even if it turns out to be just a core, doing a full driveline and chassis rebuild on the 2010 Panel i just picked up. Did the 2.2 and 2.4 use the same block and heads?

Strange the timing chain tensioner is flat like the 2006 thru 2008 2.2 but this could be just from a cheap off shore kit.
it does have VVT so it is a 2.4 litre, looks like is out of a Cobalt or Sunfire as it has the water hose from the top of the rad hose area into the cylinder head.

use all the sensors , injectors out of the 2010, closely inspect the VVT solenoids for metal debris
I suggest replacing the water pump and timing chain also the balance shaft chain.

2.2 and 2.4 used the same block and cylinder heads but different pistons and cylinder sleeves.

Thanks OB, my 2010 Panel is a 2.2 and it is a VVT, i was hoping to use it in that. I was going to swap all the ancillary stuff over to this engine if i could use it. Would there be a serial number or anything to definitively ID it? Im still learning all the differences in these little things of which there seems to be many. Planned on stripping it down to the raw long block and doing timing set before install. Probably do a leak down to asses actual condition

That paper tag on the front of the head had a "broadcast" code on it at one time; that is a partial VIN. The printing usually disappears with time. If you took that to a dealership they could figure out , if they are smart enough.
They claim the VIN is on the starter motor flange and/or on the filter bowl.

ok, found some numbers now i just have to decode them. Having trouble figuring out what that third character is between the 0 and the C, a "T" maybe?

My guess at this point is it is a 2008 (built 11/21/07) 2.4 because that is the only Ecotec that had VVT at that point. Probably not much of a way to install that in a 2010 that had a 2.2vvt originally, at least without a lot of hassle.

Shouldn’t be any hassle, just the flex fuel capability, the VVT is the same. Just 200 more cc’s!

was trying to ID it after picking it up yesterday. I also picked up a really clean 2010 Panel with 2.2vvt and 270k miles and was hoping it would work for that. Guy i bought it from thought it was a 2.2 but didnt know, it was cheap enough i just grabbed it and figured i'd find a place for it. At this point im wondering how tough it would be to get it to work in the new to me Panel, feverishly using the search function as we speak lol .

All the sensors should work from the 2010. You might need to swap the 2010 fuel injectors to the new engine.
all the mounting and exhaust fasteners are the same. Wiring harness, same
the coolant hose I pointed out will need to be replaced by the plug bolt from the 2.2 in the panel now.
