2.2 Front main seal replaced with engine in car?

So my 2.2 has developed an oil leak, the left side of the engine is covered in oil. From what I can tell its low on the engine but above the oil pan so guessing its the crank main seal. Doing some searching online it doesn't look like a horrible job but what is unclear is can it be done with the engine still in the car?

I have seen some videos on other models replacing the seal but wanting to make sure I can access all the some areas on the HHR as on a cavalier. Looks like a 2-3 hour job but going to plan on a full day just to be safe.

Rear main seal lives on the left side of the engine If your sitting in the driver’s seat.

Front crankshaft seal is #426

if you mean in the left side looking from the front bumper

Driver’s side (left side whilst sitting in the car)

If it’s the front crankshaft seal, about a 3/4 to an hour job, engine in car.
If it’s the rear main seal, the engine stays in and transmission has to come out of the car

It is on the passenger side of the car.

Oil is getting slung all over the alt, AC unit and pretty much everything on the passenger side by the belt.

Good to know I don't have to pull the engine I just put the engine in back in September. It was used from a junk yard didn't think about replacing the seal at that time but guess I should have.

Thank you.

Follow up question the main bolt is torqued to 75 lbs then another 75 degrees. I don't understand the 75 degree part, so I torque to 75 lbs then turn it another quarter turn?(well little less than that)

A full rotation is 360 degrees, a half circle is 180 , a quarter circle is 90 degrees so a little less then a quarter turn , about 12:00 o’clock to 2:30

The correct torque sequence is 74 ft lbs then 125 degrees turn , and order a new bolt , they are deemed one time use.

AC Delco 29616 seal is the one I used, to replace the leaking Felpro seal.

I would do the timing chains and guides at the same time, maybe the water pump.

Not a bad idea, seeing as you’re in there and have the splash panels off , pull the valve cover and inspect the timing chain and the front guide, they do tend to fail!

Thanks for the info guys. I replaced the seal took about 90 mins. Could have been faster if I was little more organized but all good.

will check the car in a few days and see if I'm still leaking but I think that go it. I will post back once I know. Going to go work on my project car (66 mustang) hoping to make it run this weekend will be the first time in 40+ years.
