The noise suggests loose chain and the P0016 suggests it’s already jumped time. I could be because of a bad tensioner but it doesn’t matter. You still need to open it up to fix it.

It's in the works, had a couple other irons in the fire. Luckily the wife works from home. Hoping tonight I'll get the valve cover off so I'll know for sure. Unfortunately I went with Duralast timing components last time partly out of necessity (she didn't work from home then and didn't have time to wait for Rockauto) and partly due to price (son worked at Autozone so I got them 20% off). 1 year warranty
My guess is it's the bolt and possibly the plastic guide, hopefully the chain is fine, it's probably only been driven 10 miles making the clattering noise, Maybe 1 mile since the light came on Sunday afternoon on her way home.
If there’s noise and that P0016 code , change out the guides and chain for sure.
Apparently, you cut corners, you find out the hard way. Fortunately, it’s just the chain and not the valves and pistons!
This was my go cheap, get towed home , timing chain $35.00 on EBay, how can you go wrong? Let me count the ways!
Cloyes 9-4201S and 9-4202S kits, I suggest you change all components as there maybe be damaged teeth on the sprockets. Ensure your 2008 2.2 doesn’t have VVT, prior to ordering!
It looks like in this case you're right. A lot of Duralast parts are made by companies like Moog, Cloyes, Melling, etc. In this case, using the Duralast part number for the timing kit it appears the same as the S.A.G. kit on rockauto, which is manufactured over seas in Armenia. Guess I'll be ordering online and leaving it sit rather than run up to the parts store. Truth be told I could get Cloyes online for less than the discount Duralast part I used, I just needed the vehicle repaired that Saturday so up to the parts store I went.
Do most here replace the balance chain components when doing the job? I'm also wondering if at 144k it's not time to just do a waterpump as well while it's apart.

A man has to ask himself, do I feel lucky? Well do ya?
If I go to the trouble of a re-repair like this , then yes replace the water pump. Get a brand with a metal impeller! Not plastic! To replace just the pump is good, the housing will be fine!
Closest I can get the chain alignment link to line up to the timing marks is 1 link off. I don't remember 2 years ago when doing the job if the chain will slap that top guide when manually turning over or not, but it is now. Every time the crank makes one revolution the chain slaps the top guide. I haven't yet pulled out the guides or tensioners because I'm ordering parts today. I didn't notice any broken guide pieces, but they may be being held in by the top bolt. Going to do the chain kit, balance chain kit and WP at the same time.
It looks to me like my intake cam is the one that's slightly off, that doesn't look like 2 o'clock to me, maybe like 1:30 lol.
Oldblue, are you opposed to the Cloyes kit on rockauto that includes the water pump? It would appear to be a steel impeller inside, based upon the picture. I'm looking for more detailed specs now.
