Synthetic oil

Hey all, when can i switch to synthetic oil.I have heard a hundred diifferent #'s.Just wondering what you have heard.Thanks...

The dealer change the oil as a freebe for me at around 5000 miles (DIC said 38%), I changed my oil myself to Mobil 1 around 9000 miles and have been using Mobil 1 ever since around every 5000-7000 miles or when the DIC gets to 30%.

Just changing the oil at some frequency is a good plan.

I had my oil changed to Mobil 1 at around 5000 dic actually read 50%, I figure same as Old Lar right around 5-7000.

You can change to synthetic oil anytime you want. And for the record, you can switch back at any time with absolutely no problem. It is untrue that once you go to synthetic oil you can never go back.

I switched over at 2000 miles....

Doesn't it void the warranty when you do your own oil changes?

Absolutely not. Chevy cannot penalize you for performing your own maintenance tasks, unless you do something that isn't up to spec (oil weight or wrong filter, etc.), or violate a closed system.

It's also a good idea to keep the oil & filter receipts. In case someone
questions whether the service was done on a proper schedule.

Always cover your butt with paper.

I switched at 1000 miles. If I had read the manual and seen the break in period was 500 miles I would have done it at 500 miles.

yeah, but why would you want to? I switched at 5500 miles. It was mid-June. Since that time my weekly MPG average has gone from 19.5 MPG to 21.5 MPG, consider this all city driving. The strange thing is that my weekly speed has gone from 25 MPH to 27 MPH, and no oil in the world can do that. I think there just a lot less people on the road because of gas prices, and school is out too. I'll have to check again in September to see if the oil improved the gas mileage. I'm using 0w-30
